"It's a String Thing" #238 and Time to Meet Mack

It's Tuesday, your good news day!

It is doubly good news day as we begin IAST #238 with my new tangle, Mack.  Last week I mentioned that I was developing a step out and after consulting with my Knuckleballers, tweaking a few details, and finishing up my drawings, it is now ready for "prime time"!

Let's look through the step out first, view a few examples, and then delve into IAST #238 ~

There is a lot of information to squeeze in to this format, but I love the look of these pages that Zentangle provides CZTs for tangle step outs.  The basic tangle reads down the six squares on the left-hand side.  While this illustrates one section of the tangle, the real magic happens when those sections are combined.

Mack can be tangled one square at a time, or it can easily begin with a grid.
This is the first tile I completed with it ~

First Tile with Mack - Adele Bruno, CZT

I didn't intend to draw the grid so square, so I purposely added wonkier lines toward the bottom.  Mack looked great both ways, especially once shaded.

I found it was important to draw the parallel lines in one section at a time and they magically met each other on the grid lines.

This one reminds me of long time IAST contributor Sue Agnew (Arizona).


My Knuckleballers really liked Mack (whew!).  None of us could recall a similar step out on the web, so with their blessing, I continued to develop it.

Tracey Nicholson, CZT noted that it was very rhythmic and soothing to draw the detail lines.  She is the one that likened  the "one, two, three" count of the lines to a waltz.  I hum when I draw this now, thanks to Tracey.

She also sent along a few examples from her sketchbook to expand the possibilities of the tangle.

 Once Tracey tangled eight sections of Mack, she embellished the larger triangles with more tangles.

 Look what Tracey did with this one.  I love it!

Dorian Eng, CZT (with whom I have another book coming out later this month - yay!) suggested that Mack would make a fabulous fragment.  When the squares are not mirrored, the pattern creates intriguing possibilities.

Whew!  So much fun in one little place!

"It's a String Thing" #237 Tiles

The first note this week came from Tabitha Bedoukian herself, the creator of the two tangles we used in IAST #237.  Tabitha said that she was "delighted and honoured" to have her tangles Kaboom and Kulacane chosen for this week's IAST while anxious to know if they are liked.
After this week's glorious display, I can confidently say the answer to that is a resounding YES!

This was a very pleasant one, in the beginning I didn't know how to manage and have drawn the string very pale. When Kaboom was appearing, I knew how to go further. As you can see, I have made the string more stronger (with a green gellypen) on the left side. On the right sight, the string is not visible anymore, caused by the shadowing and the tortillon. I brought a little bit of colour into the drawing for giving this tile a real Springfeeling.
I wouldn't make a tile with only these two patterns but thanks to you I did it and enjoyed it very much, thank you,

Funny that I now encounter them here, and yes I have now added them....

When I finished drawing I saw that the string was completely gone.
That does not happen to me that often.
I thought this was a nice challenge.

I started with some ideas in mind, to focus just on Kaboom, to have it bursting out from the places where your string intersects, to have various wonderful fills. But when I started drawing things took a different direction. I listened, I followed - and this is where we ended up. With a tangle that is Kaboom, but also Kulacane. With the tangle pouring along the string lines, curving with it sometimes. And then when I'd finished, when I'd rounded and shaded and signed - I see two strangely feathered dancers reaching for each other.

We had a really strong and wild wind blow through for a few hours on Wednesday. Some tiles blew off our roof. Still waiting for the roofers to come and fix them. They are very busy. Many fences also blew down, luckily not ours. So, Kulakanie was an apt tile. I can't find an accent on my iPad for the "e" so I put in an "i" to make the pronunciation right. I love KaBoom. Reminds me of the first attempt to land the first stage from a rocket onto a drone ship. It failed and the word Elon Musk used to describe the failure was KaBoom. So I used orange and red for the explosion. I did two tiles both were fun. This is the second. The first one looked a bit busy. Thanks for this challenge.

I enjoyed playing with both of these tangles this week. I think it's "literal week" because Kulecane kept reminding me of a cityscape ... so I played with ideas and then got bogged down in too much realism. So then I experimented with doing the pattern both directions instead of just up (if that makes sense) ... starting in the middle rather than at an edge ... and it reminded me of something laced. So I exaggerated that effect and ended up with sheets of decorative paper laced together. (Did I mention it's Literal Week.)

Have recently been playing around with the combined black and white tile idea that ZentangleHQ presented last holiday season...actually have been obsessed--:)...such fun...and was waiting for a good IAST to try it with.
This seemed like a worthy candidate, since part of your string bisected the tile in two...I cut along that line and continued from there...
...and it turned out much more like my usual style than my last couple of submissions...a monotangle, with just the Kaboom version, although Kulacane is very kool too--:) and a lot of empty space... shading and a double line frame finish it off...I really love the combo of white on black and black on white in the same tile...

Spring seems to have arrived at last in Wales. The tangles immediately told me where they should go with this one. The finished tile looks a bit like a futuristic city to me!

Enclosed is my finished IAST #237. At first, as usual, I had no idea how to start. So I just put pencil to paper to see what would evolve and the pencil wanted to do raggedy lines on Kulakane. Then I thought that it looked kinda watery so I added some wavy lines. This suggested an underwater current and so I smudged it all a little and my underwater theme developed. The shell came out of a semi-circular KaBoom and it was only then that I remembered the string. The string? Hmm. How can I fit my rudimentary sketch into the string? The best fit came when I turned the string 90 degrees anti-clockwise, and I then very loosely followed its outline. The mermaid in the background's scales are Kulakane though you can't tell as they are very small and smudged.
I had a lot of fun creating this scene. Tom has titled it Mermaid's Garden.

Hope you are all well there, far over the seas. Some slightly positive news from Velddrif. We had a reasonably good bout of rain, Thursday last week. Of course, it was only an extended shower, but we are very grateful for every drop that falls. Date for day zero is still 15 May. The rest of the country is having downpours and extreme weather. Our province will take many years to recover from this terrible drought.
Challenge 237 was great this week. Tabitha’s pattern Kaboom is a pattern that is easily mastered giving lively results. I will investigate different ways of using Kaboom in future zen artwork. Kaboom seems to explode, so my tile has one and a half explosions and I’ve used the fillers Onamato, Fescu and Tipple all old Zentangle Originals favourites used often. Kulacane appeared as, perhaps delicate tubes , containers for more fireworks. I enjoyed this challenge. Thank you, Adele. Looking forward to seeing all the efforts from the week’s participants.

Kaboom and Kulane were a lot of fun to play with. I added Diamant by Mariet Lustenhouwer to Kaboom; to Kulane I added Mofins by CZT Betsy Wilson and the official tangle, Mssst.
I debated which orientation to hold the tile ... a 180 degree turn to the tile was a bit realistic for me ... it suggested a palm tree with a city scape background.

...must admit to being a little sceptical of this challenge. I thought perhaps the tangles were too alike to go together and actually wondered whether to just used one of them. But I decided to just go for it and try not to over think it, which I have a habit of doing. I used my fairly new Sakura micron PN pens, which I love by the way, in two different colours to separate the tangles and was quite surprised at the result.
Your challenges often push me out of my comfort zone, which is a good thing! Thanks for this challenge.

"It's a String Thing" #237

It is Tuesday, your good news day!

I spent most of my free time today developing an idea for a new tangle.
I should have been cleaning, doing a bit of laundry, and making dinner, but I was tangling. (I am certain that sounds familiar to my dear readers.)  It was a glorious time.  The tangle is almost ready to publish.  My knuckleballers are reviewing it and there is a bit of fine tuning to add, but I hope to have it posted very soon.  I absolutely love the creative process and have learned not to rush it, so stay tuned!

On to this week's challenge...

I was in my happy place today drawing parallel lines (or I should probably say "parallel" because they aren't exactly ...) with Wavlin. For Safflower, I'm not really sure why a tangle can't be representational ... even some of the originals, like Bronx Cheer and Verdigogh, are representational ... mine looks like a flower trying to look like an egg, I think. Easter seemed like the perfect time to use that new flicking technique with colored pen. On the third egg I just put stripes in a pared-down version of Zenith.

Wishes for a joyous Easter! I am making chicken soup as we speak (type) for our Passover dinner tomorrow.
Well...once I got started with the lines for this one, I just couldn't stop! :)
Absolutely love Wavlin...learned it a few weeks ago, but hadn't remembered to do it again!
Almost thought this was going to be a monotangle...I just kept Wavlin all over the place, but at the end, I added a fragment of Zenith in the corners...the blank space within the petals looked so out of place with all the lines of Wavlin, I had to add lines to all of the sections my Zenith too! Really like the Safflower pattern, but I just couldn't find a place for it here. Love where stuff seems to overlap and all of the black inkiness...even used my micron 08--:) As always, I'm looking forward to seeing what others did with this string and these patterns!

I've been happily doing the IAST challenges for weeks and then forgetting. So this week I took extra time to make sure I sent you my tile! I've enjoyed the holiday themed strings and this was perfect for Easter! New tangles for me were Sarah Fowler's pretty new Tangle, as well as Wavelin which is also new to me. I enjoyed them both. I used pastels for a touch of color on a black apprentice tiles.

Very enjoyable challenge! I really like the tangles you chose. Wavlin and Safflower were new to me, and Zenith grew to bigger-than-usual proportions. (Do you see angels at the top and bottom of the main form? Me, too, although they were unintentional.) I used watercolor paper and painted the eggs first with my Koi kit. Lots of fun!

Attached is my version of IAST #236.
I had a lot of fun with this tangle! At first I couldn't figure out how I would use the given tangles but once I started drawing, it just created itself. I experimented with transparency, crossing borders, black/white balance, and shading. Tom called the drawing Eggstasy, so I added some soft radiance to it.
