"It's a String Thing" #183 Tiles

Our second and last nod to the beloved St. Valentine and all things LOVE is captured in IAST #183.

We used an Amore string and two beautiful tangles: Zenith and Caught .
We also extend a warm welcome to five new participants and a new country this week - we're spreading the love!
Let's take a look ~

The first tile arrived from Lily Moon (Hungary) and on her Instagram ~
here is my tile for your weekly challenge.
Happy Valentine's Day to you and everyone!
 Tangled Tidbits -
*Caught tangled in Knightsbridge fashion
*gorgeous layers of color

From Tina Kirchhübel (Germany) and here on her blog ~
A wonderful theme for a challenge. I really enjoyed tangling this one.
Greetings from Germany
 Tangled Tidbits -
*two variations of Zenith include heart shapes
*red, sparkled string section, shaded for depth

From Amy Barnickel (Florida) ~
...Finished up my grading with about 45 minutes to spare, so I got my tangling in early today. Have a great week and may you be blessed.
Tangled Tidbits -
*detail lines, sparkle, and aura accent Zenith
*perf filled string arc

From Irene (Pennsylvania) ~
Here is my zentangle using your guidelines.,I could call it, "Up up and away." Hope you like it. Have not ventured into colors yet...Ps.thanks for the welcome last time. I love seeing everyone else's work and it inspires me.
Tangled Tidbits -
*Zenith along the outer string lines
*tangle filled aura of the heart string

A very warm welcome to Vonnie Schneider (Minnesota) ~
Hello Adele! So excited to find a weekly challenge, thank you for the fun combination of string and patterns this week! Looking forward to seeing what will come next!
Tangled Tidbits -
*circular grid for Caught
*deep Zenith curves create a lovely look for the tangle
Vonnie is officially added to our map, welcome!

From Shirley (Queensland, Australia) ~
Attached is my drawing for - It’s a String Thing #183
Thanks Adele.
Tangled Tidbits -
*golden background shows off the tangles - notice the golden diamonds in Zenith create a lace like variation
*deep red and black accents

From Joke Leussenkamp (The Netherlands) ~
This is my interpretation of this week's challenge. I never draw Zenith or Caught before and it was great fun, I will use them more often... greetings from Eibergen, The Netherlands
Tangled Tidbits -
*Zenith along the string lines - perf and line filled aura variation, so pretty!
*highlights add a glow

From Susie (Thailand) ~
I have two tiles for you today. I drew the white tile first, but afterwards thought I should do a ‘red-only’ tile for a hearty Valentine. However, all red on brown turned out rather flat and boring so I added a pinch of black and a touch of white for some contrast (à another lesson learned).
 Tangled Tidbits -
*Zenith filled bow
*repeating string heart

*lovely highlights and shading
*great notes for the rest of us, thank you!

While this is Susie's second IAST, it is the first time she added her country.  Very exciting news, because another new country is added to our map.  There are a total of 31 represented to date - fabulous, isn't it?!

From Hilary (Chicago) ~
Happy Valentines Day!As you can see I love your Amore pattern so much that I used it inside the grid. As always thanks for the fun challenge — especially when it's an easy one!!
Tangled Tidbits -
*sweet Amore accented Caught
*half Zenith along the string curve

From Gudrun (Germany BW) ~
here is my tile for this weeks challenge „Valentine“
Have all a good week with tangling great tiles
Tangled Tidbits -
*curved Caught grid of alternating colors
*alternating pink and black Zenith

From Lilly (Germany) ~
In Germany, the month if love is May. I don't know why, but shouldn't each month be a month of love? Thanks for this new lovely challenge. Maybe it is too much letters, but I love writing just as much as I love tangling. And as Plato said "at the touch of love everybody becomes a poet"...,

Tangled Tidbits -
*never too many tangles, letters, or love :)
*pink string line and border frame the tangles and love filled words

A very warm welcome to Betty B (Bremen, Germany) ~
I am an absolute beginner to drawing who discovered zentangle two weeks ago. This is my first try to use a real tile instead of scribbling patterns on cheap paper and I am really surprised about the result. Before this challenge I did not know how to get started. Thanks for the inspiration!

Tangled Tidbits -
*Zenith dotted on the aura - notice how the diamonds are half shaded
*light and dark grid lines for Caught
Welcome to our tangled map Betty, so happy you found us!

This very warm welcome goes out to Donna (Vermont) ~
This is my first time doing IAST. It was also the first time I had tried both suggested tangles. Zenith is now one of my new favorites. This was a great way to deal with yesterday's snow storm.
Tangled Tidbits -
*pretty Zenith variation with curved lines and aura-ed diamonds
*single grid line Caught background
Donna is now added to our map, welcome!

From Susie (St. Louis) ~
Tangled Tidbits -
*black heart tipped Zenith and white hearts float in Caught
*sparkled dark filled string section

From Kate Ahrens, CZT IX(Minnesota) and here on her blog ~
I had lots of fun with the challenge this week, and continuing with the heart theme. I started one, and of course messed up Caught right away. Set that one aside and started another. When I finished the second one I decided to see if I could salvage the first one, so this Mondrian inspired tile was the result. I figured that I would send them both to you and you can decide which you would like to put in.
 Tangled Tidbits -
*Yes, it is truly Mondrian inspired!
*pop of red accented curved Zenith - striking.
Perfect illustration of a 'creative opportunity', thank you.
*alternating large and small grids in Caught quads
*pretty pink Zenith with white aura

From Susan (United Kingdom) ~
Lovely Valentines challenge. I like Zenith and all the variations you can do, and I also enjoyed the opportunity to get out my red pen!
Tangled Tidbits -
*double red lined Caught
*three variations of Zenith - all surrounded by a light touch of a border

From Renee (Tennessee) ~
Tangled Tidbits -
*fully shaded field of Caught
*weighted lines aura Zenith

From Gabriela Garcia (Alberta, Canada) and here on her new blog.  Congratulations, Gabriela!
Thank you Adele for another fun and relaxing challenge. This was my first time drawing "Caught" and I enjoyed how easy it is and at the same time full of possibilities depending on how big or small you draw it. "Zenith" in the other hand, is one of those patterns where I really have to concentrate but I love the end result. Have a wonderful Valentine's Day!

Tangled Tidbits -
*Curved grid of Caught in the small string section adds great dimension
*elongated diamonds in an elegant Zenith variation

From Trudi (Woodview, Ontario, Canada) ~
What fun, although I had Zenith in my pattern book other than that I had never used it. Thanks for bringing it back to my attention.
Tangled Tidbits -
*touch of sparkle in Zenith makes it shine
*patterns pop against the light grid of Caught

From Lynn Gotham (Florida) ~
Sometimes simple is the thing.
Thanks for the challenge.
Tangled Tidbits -
*simple and elegant, I would add
*spectacular Zenith variations:  dots, lines, shading, aura - yum!

From Sharyn Penna (Massachusetts) ~
I think Cupid would be very happy with your tangle choices for this week's prompt; I know I was! Sending cheer and Valentine wishes wishes to all.
Tangled Tidbits -
*Vonnie and Sharyn had the same idea with the curves of Zenith the follow the string's space - so pretty!
*doubled grid lines and hearts for Caught
*softly shaded inner space of the Amore string line

From Lori Byerly (Washington State) and here on her blog ~
Thanks for the continuing fun with hearts. It's a great challenge with an interesting combination of patterns.
Tangled Tidbits -
*ingenious take on the tangles - Caught grid inside the string lines as the little hearts accent the Amore shape
*note the Zenith corner (bottom left as pictured) the black diamonds come to one point and that point is extended to several other hearts to tie it all together - beautiful details!

From sra (India) ~
Hi Adele, I sacrificed almost an entire book trying to get this 'right' - I loved the one with the black curve the most. The black curve was actually Zenith with shading gone wrong so I tried two more versions. I still think the original one is the best!
 Tangled Tidbits -
*more 'creative opportunities' - and testimony to the magic of tangling when you come up with the unexpected beauty they provide
*checkered background of Caught
*lovely versions of Caught - notice the curve created when the grid is shaded to one side
*pretty aura for Zenith and Caught

From Lisette (Switzerland) ~
First I was not so enthusiastic about Caught but then it was fun to play with it. I am grateful for these challenges which let you tackle patters you’d never choose when tangling alone…Thank you Adele, and thank you to all of you.
Tangled Tidbits -
*swooping curve grid for Caught - lovely sparkled hearts, too
*partial and full versions of Zenith along the Amore string

From Juul (France) ~
I will send my contribution for this week .....
Tangled Tidbits -
*ruby red heart rises over the tangled background
*aura-ed grid lines of Caught create a beautiful variation

From Barbara Steyer (Germany) ~
lots of fun with this tangles! Attached is my tile for this weeks challenge.
Stay healthy and excited.Greetings from snowy Germany
Tangled Tidbits -
*Caught grid flows under the Zenith Amore
*double line of Zenith - one with pretty pink hearts

From Karin (Germany) ~
this is my entry to no. 183.
I always struggle with “Zenith” and didn´t want to participate this time but then I thought I could give it another try and this time I am quite satisfied with the result. I added some “Pozer” in the corners of the tile.
Greetings from Germany!
Tangled Tidbits -
*congratulations for pushing through - Zenith looks fabulous with the dark filled spaces around the aura
*ling shading around Caught hearts and aura for the diamonds

From Ingrid (The Netherlands) ~
In the attachment my tile # 183 for this week.
I couldn't stop myself to color this tile, so maybe it's a bit over de top? But hearts and colors it is for me, and I loved to do it.
Last week I was a bit early, but I say it again: Happy Valentine for everyone!!!
Wishing you lots of love and a blessed week from snowy and chilly The Netherlands.
Tangled Tidbits -
*vibrant colors accent the tangles - just right!
*heart filled Amore string lines

From Lovelygiraffe (Japan) and on her Instagram ~
The challenge this time was difficult to arrange for zenith to change to another tangle.
It is a very basic form of a tangle and it is a source of various tangles.
Tangled Tidbits -
*Caught grid curves as it passes through the string lines - notice the one red heart in the middle complete with aura and highlight
*initial double curve of Zenith laced around the border and Amore string

From Linda (Pennsylvania) ~
Happy Valentines Day to all.
Tangled Tidbits -
*alternating direction for various sizes of hearts around the border
*shaded Zenith appears to float over Caught

From Kate (United Kingdom) ~
My contribution to this week's challenge
Thanks & good wishes
Tangled Tidbits -
*large and small grids for Caught
*black sparkled perfs repeat in the heart string and in Caught

From Jody Genovese, CZT (New York) ~
I am attaching my Valentine’s tile for you. I hope you have a wonderful Valentine’s Day. I think I may still be digging out of a snow bank…we are possibly getting hit with a big snow storm tomorrow through Monday!
Tangled Tidbits -
*Caught changes color as it passes through the string
*fabulous variation of Zenith - sparkled, striped curves and aura
*terrific Tipple filled string space - notice the details: pearl like shading, sparkle, Printemps

From Sharon Fite (California) ~
I love hearts as strings -- challenging but fun! Happy St. Valentine's Day to you and all IAST tanglers!
Tangled Tidbits -
*Zenith orbs repeat down the heart curve
*complimentary tangles accent Caught and Zenith

From Jane (Boulder, Colorado) ~
Here's to wishing you and yours a very Happy Valentine's Day next week!
I did a little Bijou size tile for #183...simple watercolor wash, stretched out the Amore string line a touch, added some airy Caught in the large space and a fragment of Zenith in the aured part of the heart...some shading and the requisite valentine red...sweet...
I've also attached a pic of my mosaic W2...and it's here on Intstagram...it's so interesting because I see where the pattern came from in the first place...full circle...thought you'd enjoy it--:)
Have a great week filled with lots of love...and chocolate!

Tangled Tidbits -
*string lines pushed passed the tile edges
*halved version of Zenith
Below is the photo of Jane's tile mosaic, based on the Zentangle® pattern W2 - so beautiful I had to include it.  Congratulations, Jane!

From Sue Agnew (Tucson, Arizona) ~
Here's my #183. I think I said last time we used Caught that it reminds me of dimly remembered wallpaper at my grandmother's ... so I enjoyed it very much! In Zenith I decided I wanted to replace the pointy triangle with the pointy bottom of a heart, but then the heart shape fitted so snugly the other way. I wanted to outline the rest of the string with a minuscule Zenith, but while I was doing it it reminded me of another tangle that I couldn't remember the name of ... so I started looking through my "file" (pile) of printed out tangle step-outs ... I had gotten to the Fs when I had a feeling it started with an S, so I looked in the Ss and found it right away ... Snookums ... so I used Snookums but it's real similar to Zenith in that it's scalloped lines going opposite ways and tucking into each other.
Thanks for another fun week!Happy Valentine's Day!
Tangled Tidbits -
*Caught grid changes size and direction as it runs through the string's center
*sparkled lines of Zenith along with sparkle, aura, and shading

From Emily Shelton (Kentucky) ~
I wasn't feeling very sentimental about the hearts, so I tried a steampunk thing!
Tangled Tidbits -
and it still looks sweet :)
*weighted lines in the Caught grid
*shadowed shading around the string's perimeter

From Candie VanderWilt, CZT (Pennsylvania) ~
Hearts are great fun to tangle - loved this new one from Christine. And, delighted to discover how versatile Zenith can be and the lace-like effect that magically appears! Happy Valentine's week to all 💝.
Tangled Tidbits -
*string looks tucked into the tile
*weighted lines, perfs, dots, aura, and shading add to the lace-like look of Zenith

From Mariam G (California) ~
I am late in submitting, but have been engrossed in another project. I wanted to get these in to you, regardless. One is very simple and plain, the other an experiment on black. But the main reason for doing them is the inspiration: I am going to NorCal this week to celebrate my parents' 75th wedding anniversary!! If I can get these cleaned up in time, I may even put them in the card. Thanks for the lovely string!!

Tangled Tidbits -
Congratulations to your parents - 75 years married, God has richly blessed them.
*highlighted diamonds shine in Caught and the added hearts as well
*dotted grid lines of Caught - great variation!

*Amore/Caught combination
*Caught hearts fill string's weighted arc

From LezliB (Utah) ~
Hopefully, I am not too late with this. I have been having problems with my hands and eyes this week more than usual. I am sending two this week since I really liked the challenge this week. The first one I ended up not liking very well, but my son likes it and says that it reminds him of a tattoo design. It just didn't work at all for me. The second one I like a lot better, and I added a few other tangles to balance it out. I really do love your challenges and will try to get them done earlier so that I can make sure they are on time.
 Tangled Tidbits -
You're doing just fine :)
*wonderful Zenith variation
*layered arua of Caught diamonds
*soft look to the tangles with pastel coloring
*multi-layered Zenith variation

From Donna (Maine) ~
Greetings from the snowy north! Could you send a little Florida warmth up to Maine, please?
I enjoyed this challenge after a long absence. Thank you for hosting this! I always look forward to being wowed by the weekly entries.
Tangled Tidbits -
Welcome back - and yes, I'm sending warm Florida sunshine your way :)
*Zenith covered string lines - wonderful aura and made to pop against the red Caught
*doubled grid lines for Caught

From Brenda Urbanik, CZT 13 (Knysna, Western Cape, South Africa) ~
...Tangling Zenith as a border was and remains a challenge, so I will need to practice more, please do not look too closely!
Again this week I felt compelled to add some red. I also took some liberty to add some thin stripes to fill the heart border on the right.Wishing you a blessed weekend and thank you again for the lovely challenge!
Tangled Tidbits -
*deep red Zenith border
*great grid for Caught springs from the point of Amore

A very warm welcome to"Long Haired Lori", CZT 20 (Rochester, Minnesota) ~
Tangled Tidbits -
*striking variations of Zenith include aura, hearts, dots, lines...
*Zenith cleverly forms the tip heart
Lori is officially on the map, welcome!

From Patricia (Switzerland) ~
How lovely to get a chance to do these two zentangles! I wish you a loving Valentine's day.

Tangled Tidbits -
*sparkled pen adds elegance
*a glimpse of Caught's grid with accented hearts and diamonds

From Jennifer (Switzerland) ~
Here's my tile for IAST #183, featuring the tangle Caught filling the heart string and framed by a border of Zenith. While learning how to do Christine Reyes tangle Caught, I came across her tangle Heartline. It was very satisfying to fill the border of the heart with this pleasant to draw tangle! I used brush pens for Heartline and pencil crayons for the rest. The tangles, string and colors combine to a wild, joyful heart, a heart that knows how to play and have fun!
Tangled Tidbits -
What a wonderful description!
*alternating colors accent pretty tangles
*red, purple, and gold dotted grid for Caught

From Felicity Strohfeldt (South Africa) ~
This past week in South Africa the news that kept the readers and watchers busy was the death of Joost van der Westhuizen , a famous rugby celebrity, who died of Motorneurons syndrome at 45 after a six-year battle to overcome the disease. Of course, the other news was probably shown internationally, and that was the opening of Parliament on Thursday evening. One and a three-quarters of an hour of the nation’s embarrassment at the brutality and absolute chaos, that occurred when minority parties tried to prevent ” President Zuma” from delivering his State of the Nation’s speech. Fists flying, pepper spray, guards and soldiers displaying extreme force. Democracy shamed. The State of our Nation??? Sad!
Anyway, to peace and creativity. This week we had lovely challenge, inspiring and highlighting the importance of spreading “love” in the world, such a contrast to all the hate and prejudices confronting us all in some or other form every day. I decided to use variations of Zenith to mimic the string shape and Caught by Christine Reyes as a filler that encroaches on the Amore string, causing Zenith to duck and dive playfully through Caught. The shades of red are of course the champion of love, and feature strongly in contrast with black and white.
Looking forward to seeing what everyone comes up with.
Have a happy, love-filled week all.
Tangled Tidbits -
Love does endure and we must always hope in that, so thank you for pressing on, Felicity.
*awesome aura of Zenith - curved, lined, and sparkled
*touches of red - note the half red hearts in Caught

From Simone Menzel, CZT (Germany) ~
I don`t have much time this weekend, but at least I managed it to draw the IAST tile of last week.
It is a heartful time. Both tangles Zenith and Caught are very nice and your String is lovely!
 Tangled Tidbits -
*curve of Amore (top left) forms the curves of Zenith that includes delightful detail
*irregular Caught grid adds great interest

From Adri van Wyk (Upington, South Africa) ~
IN LOVE WITH ZENTANGLE AGAIN.
Tangled Tidbits -
Welcome back!
*mirrored Zenith, one version features fabulous stripes and sparkle and shading
*center of Amore string left shaded with a crescent highlight

From Marla Mendenhall (Long Beach, California) ~
Zenith is one of those wonderful patterns with almost infinite opportunity for modification andcombination, as a border, a surround, a separate element, and I always enjoy finding new ways to use it, like as a fill for Adele's Amore string. And while I'm not fond of heart patterns (which I've mentioned ad nauseam, I'm sure) I think both the stylized and the simple background grids of Caught tie it all together. Fun.
Tangled Tidbits -
Hearts seem to love you ;)
*large Zenith filled Amore
*light  and dark, doubled grid of Caught
*two Zenith Corners - super sparkle, aura, and shading

And now...

the tile for honors this week...

was sent in by...

Eni Oken, CZT (California) !

This is Eni's first time contributing to IAST and  many of us are avid admirers of her work.  A very warm welcome to you.

Eni wrote:
Although I have followed your IAST challenges for a very long time, this is the first time I submit to it. Life just seems to get in the way! I was determined to participate this time.
I just started to work on this new style over renaissance tiles. I use brown and black inking pens, colored pencils and white gel pen. Although I am not a huge fan of "cutesy" hearts, I really enjoyed making this and the way it turned out, it's fluffy on one side and rough and abrasive on the other.
The address to my web blog is http://www.enioken.com.
Thanks for holding these weekly challenges!
Tangled Tidbits -
*jewel like orbs of Zenith
*white highlights dot Zenith, Caught, and the border
*deep shading achieved with Eni's technique
*Zenith orbs taper off
*wonderful shading, coloring, and highlights

Congratulations and welcome, Eni, you are now on our tangled map

I have a little something coming in the mail for you.

A huge thank you to all of the contributors to this week's challenge.
Please know that I appreciate and treasure your kindnesses and encouragements as well.

Many thanks to Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas for

Zenith

and

Christine Reyes for

Caught

the tangles we used along with my Amore inspired string.

Check back Tuesday afternoon for "It's a String Thing" #184!
