"It's a String Thing" #214

It's Tuesday, your good news day!

A recent news story featured The Netherland's celebration of the 100th anniversary of the "de Stijl" (the Style) Dutch art movement.  The show concentrated on the noted artist Piet Mondrian and how his painting style evolved into his now famous primary colored blocks and white fields separated by perpendicular black lines.

As a young high school student many years ago, I was fortunate to view some of Mondrian's paintings on a trip to New York City's Museum of Modern Art - an unforgettable experience.

Mondrian reduced line and color to very basic, very striking elements.

It is not a stretch to say that the Zentangle® Method has something in common with "de Stijl".
Maria Thomas and Rick Roberts have isolated the five elemental strokes that comprise seemingly complicated patterns making it easy and enjoyable to recreate them "one stroke at a time".
The intricate and beautiful flow from our pens as a result - with endless thanks to them.

This week, let us celebrate our good fortune to be able to learn and practice Zentangle as we join in the 100th celebration of a movement Piet Mondrian helped to found.

We begin with this string ~

Inspired by Composition II in Red, Blue, and Yellow (1930) by Piet Mondrian

Please know that while my string was inspired by Mondrian, I kept tangling in mind and did not use a ruler to draw or measure.

The tangles we will use include a few from Rick and Maria ~

Wasn't this string just asking for it?!
