"It's a String Thing" #176

It is Tuesday, your good news day!

We are also in the final preparation days before Christmas and the New Year is just around the corner.

I am confident that we will still find time to tangle, but I have a bit of a different idea for this week.

What I'd like you to do is to revisit the tiles that you have submitted this past year (or even several years) and pick one that you would like to share again.

Once you have chosen it, send it to me with a little description - perhaps the tangles you used, the IAST #, and why you chose it.

The deadline will be extended to noon on Monday, December 26, so you will have a little extra time.

I can just imagine the variety we'll get to see.
Think of your tile and note as a gift to the rest of us, a bit of holiday cheer.

*Email your jpg file as an attachment to - brunoadelem@gmail.com
I look forward to hearing from you.

May God bless your Christmastime!

"It's a String Thing" #175 Tiles

It is a warm, happy Monday here in Florida.

Just this afternoon, my husband Lou and I returned from a quick weekend trip to Indiana to see our daughter Sarah and her beautiful family.  It was -13℉ when we left there and 90℉ (a difference of 103 degrees) just over two hours later when we landed here in Florida.
I do not miss the bitter cold, but how I do miss our precious grandchildren!

I thought of today's tiles as the plane winged its way through the sky, grateful for our safe journeys and the heavenly angels who protect us.

All things winged, of course, are references to the newest pattern from Zentangle® founders, Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas - Drawings.   IAST featured it this week and below you will find stunning tiles and creative variations.  Let's take a look ~

The first arrived from Tina Kirchhübel (Germany) ~
I was very happy about your challenge because so I had a reason to try Rick and Maria's new tangle Drawings. I like it very much. It's so elegant.
I know this should be a monotangle but when I read the new post from tanglepatterns.com with the new tangle Meriberries I thought that this pattern fits very well in my tile.
I wish you and your family a wonderful Christmas time and happy holidays. Greetings from Germany
Tangled Tidbits -
*accent lines for Drawings' curves
I had so much fun with drawing Drawings that I had to make another tile for IAST. And this time it's a real monotangle.
Tangled Tidbits -
*aura, dark background, and starry white perfs

From Susan (United Kingdom) ~
Lovely new tangle Drawings. It went a bit “Fengle” on my tile, but I’ll go and practise it some more. I added some silver pen to the wings but the photo has washed it out a bit. My phone needs good natural light to take photos and we don’t have much of that at the moment!

Tangled Tidbits -
*a lovely star appeared in the middle of the glistening tangle

From Hilary Merola ("In freeeeezing Chicago", Illinois)
Last week I missed the deadline, so this week I got right to work on the challenge. I saw Drawings a couple of days ago, tried it, and said to myself, I sure hope Adele doesn't choose this one!
I was inspired to try it again after reading at the bottom of the newsletter that your tangles don't have to look like ours, they just need to look like yours. I was also inspired to try the other tangle in the newsletter, Icanthis. I did a simplified version as a border.
Tangled Tidbits -
Thank you, Hilary - inspirational to follow your thought process...
*aura and heavenly blue accent Drawings

From Audrie Weisenfelder (Tucson, Arizona) and here on her Purple Butterfly blog ~
Drawings is such a terrific tangle. It's so flowing and organic; with so many possibilities. It was easy to come up with this tile. You can tell, since I'm so much earlier than usual. And didn't have multiple tiles that I couldn't choose between.

Tangled Tidbits -
*inner aura and weighted lines for graceful Drawings

From sra (India) ~
A very happy Christmas to you and your family! I didn't want to miss this week's challenge even though I'm traveling so I did a quick tile. Enjoyed the tour of your home in a previous post.
Thanks for hosting and have a nice week ahead. Cheers
Tangled Tidbits -
Thank you, sra - safe travels!
*lovely central Drawings, free floating ones border the tile

From Susie (St. Louis, Missouri) ~
Love this new tangle.
Tangled Tidbits -
*three festive variations of Drawings feature aura, perfs, and sparkle

From Simone Menzel, CZT (Germany) ~
The day before yesterday I drew the 10th tile for the 12daysof3Zs challenge of Zentangle.
I drew the new tangle "drawings" for the very first time.
When I saw your IAST challenge I decided to send you this 3Z tile as my contribution to your challenge.
I would like to use this Email to wish you a beautiful Christmas season and all the best for the New Year.Thank you so much for all the beautiful blogposts and the inspiring challenges!

 Tangled Tidbits -
Thank you and a very blessed Christmas to you, too.
*graceful curves of Drawings, shaded along each line

From Renee (Tennessee) ~

Tangled Tidbits -
*initial lines of Drawings flow into multiple detail curves as the tangle grows outward

From Aloyna Pakhomova (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) ~
I like this challenge a lot. When taking a look at Drawings I noticed another new tangle Icanthis and liked it. So I used both in my tile.
Tangled Tidbits -
*weighted lines of Drawings anchor it as the center focus as it branches out to include Icanthis and dark perfs

From Vicki Mitchell, CZT 25 (Moscow, Idaho) ~
Here is my tile for this week's challenge. I think I need a lot more practice on drawings before I feel truly confident with it, but it sure is a beautiful tangle.
I am also attaching last week's tile . In the excitement of finally getting a new puppy, I didn't get it photographed.
 Tangled Tidbits -
*flowing grouping of Drawings, color distinguishes each

*vibrant colors and sparkle make O a stand out

From Shirley Wohlsen (Queensland, Australia) ~
Hi Adele, please find my attached drawing for this week’s challenge “It’s A String Thing #175.
A wonderful pattern.
Tangled Tidbits -
*elegant, overlapping Drawing elements feature shading, partial inner aura and dots

From Lisette (Switzerland) ~
Thank you for this beautiful challenge. I’ve been experimenting with angel wings before but was never quite happy. This is a great pattern and fits perfectly to the season. Here is my contribution. Drawings was asking for a black tile this time…As I’m not sure if I can participate next week - Merry X-mas and a PEACEFUL New Year

Tangled Tidbits -
Thank you Lisette, may we all have a peaceful New Year.
*heavenly, star-like effect created with white charcoal shading

From Joan Delony, CZT (Florida) ~
I really like drawing DRAWINGS. I am submitting 2 entries this week because I had so.much fun with this new tangle.
 Tangled Tidbits -
*Drawings spins into Pokeroot and Verdigogh (great frame!)
*Drawings seems to move across the Florz background - shading adds depth

From Lin H (Florida) ~
Hi Adele! Thanks for your monotangle challenge with Drawings this week. Loved your tangled snowman Christmas ornament, too. Happy holidays to you and your family!

Tangled Tidbits -
Thank you, Lin and thank you for another nice frame :)
*weighted curves and white aura, along with shading, add dimension

From Jutta Gladnigg (NRW Germany) ~
Thank you so much, Adele, for inviting us to your home. It was so great seeing you and your friends on your site ... you have such a marvellous place!!!Challenge 175 is again great - this time there is no string...! So I just began and after finishing and seeing the angel's wings a quote from Genesis 1:3 came to my mind - "And God said, Let there be light: and there was light." So this is sort of a (metaphorical) Christmas tile...
Tangled Tidbits -
Thank you, Jutta - that is a beautiful verse.
*doubled, curved lines of Drawings accented with detail lines
*deep, dark background
*Raindotty filler

From Gesine (Germany) ~
the Drawings monotangle was a great experience. I didn’t quite know how to begin, but once I started, the tangle just flowed. It’s definitely a tangle to revisit! I only used a single black ink pen and decided to continue with shading in ink after I accidentally started with it. I like the original better than the photo, but I’m really pleased with the resulting tile.
I wish you and your family Merry Christmas and a good and healthy year 2017
Tangled Tidbits -
*darkened at the overlaps, sweet details for each Drawings, tangle seems to fly!

From Amy Barnickel (Florida) ~
Hi Adele. Crazy busy this week tangling all the EVERYTHINGS! Christmas presents, IAST, continuing work on my office wall...it's been a tangle-riffic week.
Tangled Tidbits -
"Tangle-riffic" - I'll be using that, thank you, Amy!
*little black perfs in each curve really pop with soft shading to accent them

From Jody Genovese, CZT (New York) ~
I’m early for a change ... I’ve had a lot of practice with Drawings doing the 12daysof3Zs challenge with the Zentangle folks. Love it…
Please find my tile attached. Hope you are getting excited for Christmas. Warmest wishes to you!

Tangled Tidbits -
..and to you too, Jody!
*full and partial views of elegant Drawings - Printemps and perfs fill the background

From Donna (Wisconsin) ~
Tangled Tidbits -
*sensational use of Drawings creates a lovely partridge

and another from Donna ~
*Drawings and Icanthis morph - how fun!

From Ragged Ray (United Kingdom) ~
Along with the release of the new official tangles was this quote 'we remind you that your tangles are not supposed to look like ours . . . but rather, to look like yours!'. This has been in my head and heart all week, and it might be one of the wisest things I've read this year. Applicable to all things, not just our tangles.
I think I'm probably still in the mimic stage with Drawings, I need to play with it longer for it to become mine. This one is heavily influenced by the one you shared on your Words of Wisdom tile a few weeks back. It's wonderful to draw - it surprises me with where it goes. My tile insisted on being used on an angle this time! It looks very festive, but I'm sure will suit other seasons too. I think we'll be using this for years to come!
Tangled Tidbits -
You echo Hilary's comments and add yes, it does indeed apply to all things we create...
*layered rows of Drawings with weighted lines, soft shading, three outer aura, and dotted accents against a heavenly blue

From Sabine (Germany) and here on her blog ~
this is my entrie for this week - the first since a long time ago. Drawings is a lovely pattern, really just right for christmas time. I added some golden Tipple.
With many greetings from Germany

Tangled Tidbits -
Welcome back :)
*Drawings peeks out from under the border and floats amid golden Tipple

From Gabriela Garcia (Alberta, Canada) ~
Hi Adele, I really enjoyed playing with "Drawings"! And with all the buzz from Christmas errands and shopping plus all the regular work I found myself in desperate need for some relaxing moments, and what better thing to do to relax than to draw some zentangles :-)
I found your post with the snowman ornament so funny and true....and comforting.. ;-) Thanks Adele! And thank you for sharing your BEAUTIFUL home and studio with all of us in your post.Wishing everyone a LOVELY CHRISTMAS with only tiny melt downs ;-)
 Tangled Tidbits -
Thank you, Gabriela!
*Drawings takes the form of a Christmas tree - how very creative
*a lovely Drawings crested ornament

From Lucy Banta, CZT (New Jersey) and here on her blog ~
Merry almost Christmas! Thank you for the angelic tangle opportunity -- a welcome diversion from the hustle and bustle that accompanies this time of year.
Tangled Tidbits -
*dark sparkled center, weighted outer lines, and soft shading

From Val (Tucson, Arizona) ~

Tangled Tidbits -

From Michele Wynne (California) ~
I'm completely enthralled with Drawings.

Tangled Tidbits -
...and it shows!
*two multi layered Drawings, sparkled aura, stippled shading, sparkled perfs, and white accented border lines

From Karen, The Creative Miss L (Canberra, Australia) ~
Here’s my attempt at Drawings. When I drew this tangle it reminded me of pink Asiatic lilies, which are my favourite flower. So, I added a pink border and yellow highlights. Thanks for another challenging year of Zentangle.
Tangled Tidbits -
*doubled lines, light curve accent lines, lovely colors

From Lily Moon (Hungary) and on her Instagram ~
here is my tile for your weekly monotangle challenge. I use for this tile black, brown and blue Pigma Micron pens, white gellyroll pen and Polychromos pencils for coloring and shading.
Tangled Tidbits -
Thank you for listing your materials - that is inspiring.
*aura-ed sections of Drawings filled with colorful accents, shaded as though standing up

From Sharyn Penna (Massachusetts) ~
Just as we begin to wind down (or wind up!) for Christmas, we find your prompt featuring the newest official tangle, Drawings. How can I not squeeze in some tangling time for this? For my tile I added Flux ... but I have visions of so many mixes and mashings ... can't wait to slow down and put pen to task! And I'm so looking forward to the big reveal!Cheers to you and cheers all for happy holidays.
Tangled Tidbits -
Please send pictures when you do pen those ideas.
*stunning result with flowing layers of Flux between the 'S' curves of Drawings
(nice frame!)

From Felicity Strohfeldt (South Africa) and here on her blog ~
Drawings! A lovely new tangle by Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas. Probably rather, obvious but I couldn’t resist trying a Christmas Angel. Result - a little mischievous angel, but it is after all the time of joy and being merry. Will use this pattern often in the future.
Wishing you and all who participate in IAST a peaceful and memorable Christmas. Thank you Adele for inspiration, enthusiasm and encouragement throughout 2016!
Love from a sunny South Africa

Tangled Tidbits -
...a heavenly angel!

Wednesday's Words of Wisdom

Here is a timeless post from my archives, first published on December 18, 1013...

Wednesday's Words of Wisdom...

and a little ZIA love...

ZIA Snowman Ornament,  Adele Bruno, CZT
This cute little guy is the ornament I made for my husband this year.  I have given him an ornament for most of the thirty Christmases that we've been together.  Some have been purchased, but most of them I have made - each one capturing something sentimental about the previous year.

This year I've combined two things:  my love of all things Zentangle® and a sentiment that made me laugh out loud when I read it.

While shopping this past week, I came across a plaque that pictured a wilting snowman and these witty and charmingly universal words:

It's not an official family gathering until someone has a melt down.

Isn't that so true?!  Picture little ones up to their ears in wrapping paper - exhausted, removed from their usual routine.  Or newlyweds trying to satisfy each side of the family while clinging to time for themselves.  Moms cooking, baking, and entertaining.  Dads being forced to read directions and assemble toys large and small. It's inevitable - someone is bound to have a meltdown.

Reading this just put my whole holiday is perspective and put a smile on my face. Christmas will be Christmas and  for the happiest of reasons -
that we are together in proximity or in spirit,
that we give simply for the joy it brings,
that we take time to tell our friends and family we love them and we care,
that our hearts are full of the gratitude, joy, and peace because of Christ's birth.

So bring on the cookies and the carols,
the presents and the parties,
the shopping and the shipping,
the memories and yes, the meltdowns!

ENJOY!

"It's a String Thing" #175

It's Tuesday, your good news day!

It truly is our good news day because Rick and Maria just released the step out for their new tangle Drawings.

How providential that this winged tangle was released today, the week before Christmas, when angles surround us in carols, stories, celebrations, and in the people we encounter.   It is the perfect gift for tanglers everywhere.

And as Rick notes in their latest newsletter, it just may become one of your favorite tangles.

Because Drawings is very much a free form pattern, we will begin with a blank tile.

Add dots and a border if you want to, but they are not necessary.

The goal for IAST this week is to create a monotangle using Drawings.

The step out for Drawings can be found here in the newest Zentangle newsletter.

Here are the (Not so) Official Guidelines:
* Challenges are posted on Tuesdays.
*Use the string posted for the week and patterns that begin or contain the letter(s) indicated
* Submit a photo of your tile saved as jpg or scan your tile (300 dpi or higher) and save as a jpg
*Email your jpg file as an attachment to - brunoadelem@gmail.com
*Entries are to be submitted by Saturday evenings.

Send in your photos - you will encourage and inspire fellow Zentangle® enthusiasts all over the world.  WHEN YOU SIGN YOUR NAME, PLEASE INCLUDE WHERE YOU LIVE.
FOR EXAMPLE:   ADELE BRUNO (FLORIDA)

PLEASE NOTE: It is not necessary for you to have a blog or website to participate.
In order to eligible for the drawing, you must send in your completed tile.

If you do have a blog or website, I will add a link upon request.
Please include the site specific URL.

I look forward to your emails.
HAVE FUN!

"It's a String Thing" #174 Tiles

The challenge this week began with a tree-like string and two totally happy tangles:  Maria Thomas' Zenith and my 'O'.

You may find yourself humming the carol "O Christmas Tree" as you take in all of the beauty below.

Let's take a look ~

The first tile arrived from Lori Byerly (Washington State) and here on her blog ~
Thanks, Adele, for another fun Christmas challenge. :)We finally got snow up here in Washington. We will have a white Christmas after all. So, of course, I needed a little snow with my tangled tree as well.
Tangled Tidbits -
...and this is the only snow I'll get in Florida, so thank you :)
*black sparkled perfs tip Zenith and the tree
*shading of Zenith brings out the white spaces of the tangle variation

Tangled Tidbits -
*sparkled Christmas red perfs fill O - even on the tree top
*rows of multicolored Zenith, aura-ed and shaded

From Montse (Madrid, Spain) ~

Tangled Tidbits -
*Zenith lines the string, frames the black center
*varied sizes of O shaded on the inside

From Beth Gaughan (North Carolina) ~
Thank you for the virtual tour of your lovely home! It was so nice of you to share the weekend with those of us who couldn't be there in person.I had foot surgery yesterday, so here is my tile drawn under the influence of pain medication. Instead of a Christmas theme, I believe it looks like a Celtic theme. I realized halfway through that I drew Zenith incorrectly, but I actually like how it turned out.
Tangled Tidbits -
My heart goes out to you for your surgery - have a speedy recovery!
*double lines of Zenith
*large arcs suggest the circles of O

From Gabriela Garcia (Alberta, Canada) ~
Hi Adele! This was such a fun combination of string and patterns...very festive!! :-) it was my first time using Zenith and found it at the beginning a little bit tricky but once I got the hang of it I started having fun with it changing the lengths in the triangles and/or circles and creating all sort of very interesting results. At the end I chose this one that reminded me of little elfs in stockings, although my son said they look like Santas with a moustache :-)
At the beginning I shaded all with graphite but then my son insisted I colour the tree green ... So since we couldn't agree in which one was better I decided to send both pictures :-)
Merry Christmas to everyone!
Cheers from Canada
 Tangled Tidbits -
*absolutely darling Zenith elves tipped with O
*twinkling O's dangle from swirls
*addition of green spotlights those clever little elves

From Lynn Gotham (Palm Coast, Florida) ~
Thank you for another interesting challenge. Thought I would just keep it simple. Love your O tangle and your frame.
Tangled Tidbits -
Thank you Lynn - so happy you enjoy the frame.
*creative square O in the base of the tree and triangular O at the top
*a Zenith cross

A very warm welcome to Gara Hudson (Florida) ~
After a year enjoying everyone's contributions week after week I finally decided to submit one..... the berries tried to get away there at the end but I was able to contain them(:-)
It's mounted on one of Adele's beautiful frames, which I love!
Tangled Tidbits -
Hat's off to a first - two frames in a row, thank you Lynn and Gara.
*red 'berries' on Zenith
*lovely O - varied sizes, colors, sparkle, and shading
And now, I am happy to say that Gara (one of the nicest people in the world) is on our map!

From Karin (Germany) ~
this is my entry to challenge no. 174.
I am glad that I have enough time this weekend to participate again.
Wish you a contemplative Advent season!
Greetings from Germany
 Tangled Tidbits -
...a contemplative Advent - a peaceful thought, thank you.
*rows of aura-ed Zenith

I enjoyed very much the virtual tour of your home. Thank you for your hospitality. It must have been great days for you with so many dear friends, family and visitors around the house.
In the attachment my tile # 174 for this week. I made a very traditional approach on this challenge. I'm curious to see what others have done.
 Tangled Tidbits -
*the white, solid centers of O layer the tangle in the foreground like snow
*Zenith garland with detail lines sparkling the orbs

From Val Steele (Johannesburg, South Africa) ~
Happy holidays Adele.
Thanks for the Christmas tree challenge.
Here's my "O" and Zenith Tree.
Tangled Tidbits -
*Zenith defines the tree and O fills it up
*simple version of Zenith along the border

From Val Barsevich (Tucson, Arizona) ~
Here is my "practice" tree in my notebook, but I didn't have a chance to do more than this....so here goes!
Thanks for the inspiration from all the creative tanglers!

Tangled Tidbits -
*shaded string lines, Zenith garland, and pretty puffs of O
*Florz background

From Audrie Wiesenfelder (Tucson, Arizona) and here on her Purple Butterfly ~
As often is the case, I ended up with more than 1 tile for this challenge. At first I wasn't sure how (or even if) I was going to use O. I ended up up using it in all 3 versions after all. But I really couldn't decide between them. So I'm sending them all:
Just realized that I didn't sign the last one, but that's OK.
The whole shebang is on my blog
 Tangled Tidbits -
Shebang is such great word - haven't heard it for a long time!  Thank you for the smiles.
*scalloped lower edge created with Zenith
*weighted lines
*detail lines and shading accent Zenith
*O accents the string lines
*similar 'tree' has a very different look when O floats away

From Jody Genovese, CZT (New York) ~
Thank you for sharing the pictures of your tour. It looked amazing and this was the next best thing to being there.
Attached is my tile for 174, out of my comfort zone with the color, but really had fun.

Tangled Tidbits -
If those are wine charms, I'll be over for a toast :)
*spectacular O filled tree with a Zenith garland
*star tipped Zenith orbs - with added arua
*lovely shades of green and colorful details

From Michele Wynne (Washington State) and here on her blog ~
Thanks so much for this lovely challenge. This ended up very different from what I intended. O seemed to demand solo status on the tree:-) I really enjoyed drawing this. I've decided to make my Christmas tags just like this:-)Thanks for all you do and wishing you and your family the happiest of holidays.

Tangled Tidbits -
This will make beautiful gift tags.
*white O features Tipple, blue shading, highlights
*pretty Zenith border - string's 'trunk' is filled with aura from Zenith

From Katrina Handson (Florida) ~
This weeks tangle was a great way to start break after finals week. I love Christmas! I like how the tangle O can be used to make doily like patterns :) :) and the other tangle zenith was so pretty and easy its one of my new favorites. it was also nice to get to use my gold marker again :D
Tangled Tidbits -
*O doilies - so sweet
*Zenith garland tipped with multi-colored O

From Felicity Strohfeldt (South Africa) and here on her blog ~
Hope you have had a peaceful week after all the art tour activities. You have a beautiful home. All looks so cosy and peaceful. Loved all the intimate corners and cherished artworks. Lovely to participate in such a venture with the help of a loving family and dear friends. Sure it made you glow with happiness and a sense of achievement.
I made the challenge relatively on time this week. I looked at the string and obviously thought, “What again this year?” Then. “How do I do it, only with Zenith and O by Maria Thomas and you?
My method is to look at the challenge on Wednesday and only get to trying the challenge at the earliest Saturday, but mostly on Sunday, when activity comes to a bit of a standstill here. Unconsciously, the challenge rattles about in my head and when I sit down whatever has stuck comes out. Zenith and O did it!
So once more I’ve enjoyed the challenge this week. Used a bit of gold again this time, but it doesn’t really show up on the computer. Will probably turn this tile into my electronic Christmas card to send to people who have contact with the museum that I run.

Tangled Tidbits -
This is a glorious Christmas card idea.
*candles spring from Zenith
*shaded aura for Zenith
*O details repeat in the candle glow and tree base

From Martina (Austria) ~
Hi Adele, Hi everybody!
The pattern Zenith is not mine ;-)) ..... here is my creation.
Greetings again from Austria ;-)
Tangled Tidbits -
*overlapping lines of Zenith
*lovely golden O
