"It's a String Thing" #113 Tiles

This week's challenge happily proved that the love of pasta is a common theme around the globe - literally.

Tiles arrived from the Untied States, The United Kingdom, Ireland, Sweden, The Netherlands, Germany, Hungary, France, Spain, India, Taiwan, Russia, Australia, and South Africa.
How exciting is that?!

We tangled with noodle-like patterns and one that resembled stacking bowls.  The results were even more delicious than I could have imagined.

Let's take a look ~

The first tile is from Joanne Faherty (United Kingdom) ~
Love this weeks its a string thing!:) even my just woken up brain worked out a few places where the tangles could go! And so here is one of them! I like pots n pans hadn't tried it before. Still not a great fan of 5-n-2 it looks messy when i do I although one section of it is shaded differently and it does look better I decided to keep hollibaugh light and airy today.

Tangled Tidbits -
*shaded 2-n-5 appears rounded
*rounded intersections of Hollibaugh
*pretty stack of Pots-n-pans

From Sarah (Michigan) and on her blog ~
I loved the idea of this challenge. So I made some rogue noodles and had a great time. Thanks! Great tangles this week! Happy Inktober! #inktober
Tangled Tidbits -

*alternating black and white backgrounds for thick Hollibaugh lines

From Lisa Preston (Marietta, Georgia) ~
Didn't think I would get a chance to participate this week, but I squeaked out some me time. As someone said in a recent challenge, I went back to basics last night and worked hard on not worrying about how this would look and concentrated on the doing part. Aah! So relaxing that way!
I used a fine tip fountain pen with blue ink and I really like what happened! I see carrot shaped pants with little eyeballs all over, appropriate for Oct, I think!

Tangled Tidbits -
*wonderful comments for two reasons - we learn from each other
and tangling really is relaxing that way
*a border of Pots-n-pans
*curves for 2-n-5

*Hollibaugh pasta

A very warm welcome to Karina L'Estrelle (Perth, Western Australia) ~
A friend introduced me to your blog and strings just the other day and I loved it. So attached is my first tile. I hope I did it right. 3.5" x 3.5" following the guidelines on String 113.
I took the photo with my phone and attached it to this email, so I hope it's alright.
My first ever attempt at one of your strings. I used the Hollybough as 'straight' and 'open' to give me segments. Then I used the other 2 designs to fill the spaces. I had lots of fun. Thank you and I look forward to attempting more of these challenges..

Tangled Tidbits -
*two variations of Pots-n-pans along the string lines
*note the interesting look Pots-n-pans takes on with added detail lines on one side and 2-n-5 filling in the other
*contrasting light and dark tangled spaces

And the next time just happened to be from her friend, Sara Belmont-Kleingeld (Australia) ~
I have spent many months traveling with my family so haven't had a chance to do one of your challenges for a really long time. It feels good to get back to it.
I hope it is no problem that I do my tangles on grid paper. I know zentangle is supposed to be free and easy but I enjoy it more using the grid paper.
Also, I showed your web site to a girlfriend, Karina, I hope she has submitted her first tile...

Tangled Tidbits -
*border of 2-n-5
*basket weave of Hollibaugh
*pretty stacks of Pots-n-pans

From HeidiSue (Utah) ~
Your post got me hungry and now I'm cooking noodles...noodle stir fry for lunch at work tomorrow.

And while that finishes up, I'm sending you my entry for the String Thing Challenge.
I haven't played with Pots N Pans for a long time, but there's a little bit about that in my blog here
Did I ever enjoy this. 2N5 was LOADS of fun! And then there just had to be bubbles. Lori Byerly's bublz made a brief appearance...those are fun to do. Tipple makes good bubbles. Bubbles! Anyway, another great challenge. Thanks!

Tangled Tidbits -
*expressive eyes (circles) of 2-n-5
*2-n-5 Hollibaugh
*multiple little stacks of Pots-n-pans, nicely detailed

From midori, CZT (Florida) ~
here is my submission for this week's challenge:
i rotated the string 90º clockwise, followed the strings with 'pots-n-pans' creating a 'hollibaugh' effect, then tangled a few actual hollibaugh.' i filled the background with '2-n-5' enhanced with perfs between the lines. this image has a somewhat retro vibe... reminescent of my childhood winters, enjoying bowls of 'real' ramen noodles with my favorite chopsticks.
Tangled Tidbits -
*phenomenal sense of depth to the tangles
*dark Hollibaugh with width and shadow
*aura added to circles of 2-n-5 and circles repeat throughout

From Jenny Hopkins (Australia) ~
I was sitting here the other day feeling a little flat, when I suddenly said "It's Tuesday. My good news day!" My daughter stared at me as though I was more than a little strange. I don't know whether it was what I said or how I said it, but I suspect that it was because it was actually Wednesday in this part of the world.
Anyway, the fact is that the thought brightened my day significantly and the week's challenge was equally yummy. Luckily, it was spaghetti for dinner anyway, so all that talk of noodles didn't mean I had to change the menu.

Thank you for bringing us "Good news days" and happy birthday, Isabella.

Tangled Tidbits -
*deep black repeats in each of the three tangles
*dots of 2-n-5 travel across Hollibaugh
*detail lines of Pots-n-pans radiate from the same point in each section
Thank you for making me smile and for sharing these Good News days!

From Bhamathi (Bangalore, India) ~
I am back to your site after a long while..
I started with Hollibaugh and then Pots-n-pans. Sayantika's tangle was so much fun that I forgot to leave space for another pattern..
Glad that I came back and I found myself a new favourite in Pots-n-pans

Tangled Tidbits -
*doubled string lines
*Pots-n-pans stacked in either direction
*double lines and dots accent Pots-n-pans
Welcome back!

From Deb Jacob (Wisconsin) ~
Good Morning Adele, Happy weekend to you. First time for me for pots & pans. I loved it..suspect it may become one of my macaroni & cheese tangles. Carpe Diem!

Tangled Tidbits -
*Hollibaugh strings
*light touch of 2-n-5 background
*single center stack of pots-n-pans

From Linda Goncalves ( Pennsylvania) ~
Well, this one just wanted to be representative, rather than abstract.
It also demanded TWO TITLES: Oodles of Noodles and Noodles Gone Wild.
So... I guess I'm having Chinese or Thai for dinner as soon as
possible!
Wishing your daughter a very Happy Birthday!
Tangled Tidbits -
*Hollibaugh chopsticks
*Pots-n-pans stacked in the string sections
*curly Hollibaugh 'noodles'

From Michele Wynne (California) ~
Here's 113. This was one of those challenges that seemed to have a mind of it's own. I've used all of these patterns before and really enjoy them. I saw an "M" in the string an aimed the focus there. I also used this piece as an InkTober day in my blog. Thanks for another great challenge and for everything you do here.
Tangled Tidbits -
*2-n-5 filled Hollibaugh string lines - beautiful shading
*three variations of Pots-n-pans
*aura of curves in Pots-n- pans

From Beth Gaughan (North Carolina) ~
I am not very happy with my tile this week, but here it is anyway. I can't seem to draw Hollibaugh without thinking of Dr. Seuss's A Big Ball of String, and my 2-n-5 always reminds me of eyeballs, this week they are part of robot faces. Oh well, thanks for a fun challenge as usual.

Tangled Tidbits -
*shaded background of Hollibaugh
*little touches of 2-n-5 seem to have life to them
*just a peek of Pots-n-pans

From Ingrid (The Netherlands) ~
What a fun challenge this week. I loved to draw the pot-n-pans. Used the stringline to draw them big. That's why they are arranged as they are.

Tangled Tidbits -
*bold Hollibaugh
*2-n-5 decorated Pots-n-pans
*varying line weight, super shading

A very warm welcome to  AngelEggroll (Taiwan)~
I am AngelEggroll (捲) from Taiwan. It's my first time joining the "it's a String Thing". I am so happy I found this challenge.
Here is the post on my blog

Tangled Tidbits -
*2-n-5 border
*Fassett decorated Pots-n-pans
*wonderful contrasting curved and straight lines of Pots-n-pans

From Jane Glotzer (Boulder, Colorado) ~
Happy Autumn...except the seasons are so messed up around here that we are having close to 90 degree weather in mid October! I am missing the beautiful, cool, crisp fall, and we will probably go straight to winter when the first snow storm arrives--:)
But, onto challenge #113...
Started with the 2-n-5, and used a pretty large-ish grid, but had only the basic circles in that section at first...Added my Hollibaugh (a favorite of mine and I'm sure, many many others) in the other two main areas, but quickly decided to extend the ends into that bottom area...which left no room for Pots-n-pans, but who wants to do dishes, anyway? :) I have been completely into "Tippling" everywhere lately, so had to add that to the Hollibaugh "background." Then the circles in 2-n-5 seemed to need a boost, so I embellished a touch and they turned into records (I'm pretty sure you remember those...) A light shading added some nice details and effects.
(I am also loving how my scanned images are coming out...yay!)
Have a great week...and as always, I am looking forward to seeing what other artists are doing and many thanks for all you do for the tangling community!

Tangled Tidbits -
*Fabulous detail in 2-n-5 (yes, I still own a stack of records :)
*line groupings in 2-n-5, a bit offset, combined with shading add depth
*shaded Tipple

From Donna Flynn (Maine) ~
I discovered that my black tile looked better against my sketchbook, so I tinkered with the background. I Love Pots and Pans!
Thanks, as always!
Tangled Tidbits -
*tile against a sketch book page - very clever!
*Pots-n-pans features 2-n-5 decorations
*string line on black tile tangled in two patterns

From Jennifer Sparrow (North Carolina) ~
I found this one especially challenging when you posted it, but once I finally started, I had lots of fun. In some ways, it felt more like I was drawing as opposed to tangling, but it was still relaxing!
Tangled Tidbits -
*circles of 2-n-5 bubble over
*Hollibaugh weaves from one section to another
*weighted lines of 2-n-5 - and each one is shaded

From Annie Taylor (Spain) ~
Loved this, but couldn't get my spaghetti in the bowls!
Thank you.

Tangled Tidbits -
*string line cuts through Hollibaugh to reveal Pots-n-pans
*pretty white highlights, soft shading
*just a touch of brown on the 2-n-5 decorated Pots-n-pans

From CZT Lucy Banta (New Jersey) ~
I LOVE your challenge this week. I could eat spaghetti every day of the week, so this was lots of fun. Thank you.
Here's the link to my blog
Tangled Tidbits -
*string line of Pots-n-pans - great corners
*deep dark background
*2-n-5 tangled Hollibaugh

From me ~
I curved the string line and made it into Pots-n-pans.  Hollibaugh springs from each of the 'pans'.  I repeated the lines of 2-n-5, in opposing directions as the background.  This was extremely relaxing to tangle.

A very warm welcome to Elspeth (Wyoming) ~
I am happy to be able to finally submit a completed challenge!! I had fun doing it and learning a new tangle - pots-n-pans. Actually 2-n-5 was new for me too!
Looking forward to more.
Tangled Tidbits -
*two variations of Pots-n-pans
*grid base for 2-n-5
*wavy Hollibaugh

From Sue Agnew (Tucson, Arizona) ~
Here's my tile for this week. I had a lot of fun! I had figured out a way to make the parallel lines in 2-n-5 look like ziti (is that what I mean? the tube pasta with diagonal cut ends) but it involves drawing the first line a little shorter than the others and starting the fifth line a little below the others, and I wasn't able to sustain my concentration for an entire tile. Also, I hoped that if I put the "pimento" on alternate sides of the "olives" they wouldn't look so much like eyeballs.
Anyway ... I'm about to put a pot of water on for pasta ... wonder how many others are eating pasta this week thanks to you!
Tangled Tidbits -
*olive shapes for 2-n-5
*large pot for Pots-n-pans 'pasta'
*ribbons of Hollibaugh

From Nancy Sass (Virginia) ~
String #113 was so enjoyable. I used all 3 tangles, Pots n Pans, 2 n 5 and
Hollibaugh. Thank you for giving up such great challenges!
Tangled Tidbits -
*Pots-n-pans in Hollibaugh
*Hollibaugh wraps around tangles
*curved 2-n-5

From Becky Welty (North Carolina) ~

Tangled Tidbits -
*two zigzagged Pots-n-pans
*dark dots for 2-n-5
*fabulous dew drops

From Sally Sheldon (Massachusetts) ~
At the last minute I started this week's challenge and I guess I wasn't paying enough attention. After I had most of it completed I realized that 2-n-5 had become 2-n-4 so being as noodles are squiggly the fifth line became a squiggle across the four lines. Pots and pans were only half a pan or had straight lines instead of curved. And Hollibaugh which is a favorite pattern only received a little attention. It certainly is different from what I expected! But Zentangle is full of surprises.
Tangled Tidbits -
*triangular Pots-n-pans
*wonderful variation to add the fifth squiggly line to 2-n-5
*alternating black and white background for Hollibaugh

From Jackie Melanson (Maine) ~

Tangled Tidbits -
*mini Pots-n-pans
*detailed field of 2-n-5
*lines repeat in 2-n-5 and Hollibaugh

From Jessie Plouffe (Connecticut) ~
Here is my tile for this week's challenge. I had forgotten how much I
like Hollibaugh and Pots n Pans, and I discovered that I like C n 5.
Tangled Tidbits -
*2-n-5 trimmed Pots-n-pans
*Hollibaugh tucked into the border
*nice touch of black to round out intersecting lines of Hollibaugh

From Felicity Strohfeldt (South Africa) ~
I found it rather difficult to find my “muse” even this week. But I had to try. String 113 by Melody Hampshire, hmmm? What’s Adele up to? Hollibaugh by Molly Hollibaugh, Pot-n-Pans by Sayantika Ray and 2-n-5 Roby-Larvey? Noodle day and Pots-n-pans and Hollibaugh probably fit, but 2-n-5 , String 113? Questions , questions running through my mind. Answer! The String is not the Alpha and Omega of zentangle, so what followed is my take. Noodle day , so explosion of oodles of noodles, the Hollibaugh Brand, Pots-n-Pans stacked this way and that. Then a tickie’s worth of 2-n-5 thrown in. Not my usual style, but I’m back in the Zen I hope. On my blog

Tangled Tidbits -
*string line shared with 2-n-5 and Pots-n-pans
*dots repeat in all three tangles
*layers of shading

From Elisa (Paris, France) ~
I really had fun with your "National Noodle Day" challenge ! As you can see with my tile, I really followed your instructions, using the string as the basis for my Pots-n-pans which look like a pile of bowls tumbling over a 2-n-5 decorated tablecloth, spilling Hollibaugh noodles in the process...
Tangled Tidbits -
*a string line stack of Pots-n-pans
*black spaces compliment in Hollibaugh and Pots-n-pans
*2-n-5 shaded in the lined squares

From Sharyn Penna (Massachusetts) ~
Ahh, pasta! A staple in my pantry. And Hollibaugh is a perfect pasta ... simple and complex depending on how it's served.
Thank you for a prompt that comforted the soul.
Tangled Tidbits -
*long lines of Hollibaugh
*string line of stacked Pots-n-pans
*2-n-5 background blends with Hollibaugh

And now, the tile(s) for honors this week belong to

Marla Mendenhall (California) !

Marla sent in three tiles along with a poem she wrote - an ode to pasta.
Below is her note along with her artwork.  I will let them speak for themselves ~

Ah yes, pasta. I pay homage to it's righteousness every day.
And so, after a big bowl of [tortellini] I settled down to tangle, following the string (although tile is quarter-turn clockwise) and sticking to the pattern guidelines. I thought I was done.
But..."When I woke up this morning, Noodles on my mi-i-i-ind. Yes, noodles on my mind..." Tile #2
And then, Tile #3, oodles of noodles, as if from a dream...
We'll start with Lasagna.
Is there anything fine-a?
Next course, Fettuccine,
Macaroni and Ziti.
Anglehair and Bow-Tie,
Garlic Spaetzle, wok fried.
Each forkful, yum-yummy
'Til I'm full in the tummy.
Leave the sauces on simmer,
While my waistline gets slimmer
Because after a snore
I may just want some more.
But one thing is certain...after we sup,
Since I made the pasta, you can clean up!

Congratulations and thank you, Marla!

I have a little something coming in the mail for you.

Thank you to the creative minds behind the string and patterns we used

To all of our participants this week, a huge thank you for your wonderful artwork. kind words, and shared passion for pasta.

After all of this mouthwatering talk of noodles, look at this 'tangled' bowl of pasta ~

Tangled Pasta    Photo by Adele Bruno, CZT

I found this bow tie pasta at a specialty olive oil store near my home.  The label says they were made in Italy with squid ink for coloring.  I've not cooked them yet, just admired them.  I think they may be just too pretty to eat.

Check back tomorrow for "It's a String Thing" #114!

  1. Great tiles from everyone, but the best thing was that bowl of tangled pasta. Amazing that it just happened to be in a shop near you. I have never seen anything like it. They forgot to put the touches of shine in the stripes though ;-)

  2. What a delight to open my email and peruse the gallery show this morning. What a fun challenge and I love what everyone did with it. That bowl of tangled pasta is beautiful. I wouldn't want to eat it either but I'd be so curious to see how it cooks up.
Many thanks for everything you do.
