"It's a String Thing" #280 Tiles

I thoroughly enjoyed my "Gramma time" and I gleaned from the notes below that many of us share that same joy - and what joy it is!

The combination of tangles Cat-kin, Opus, and Mi2 made for some especially beautiful tiles for IAST #280.  Many thoughts turned to spring with these more organic patterns.  I am glad to know that my Tips for Tangling Mi2 (3G Mi2) helped make that magical tangle easier to draw.

Let's take a look ~

The first tile arrived from Joanne (New Brunswick, Canada) ~
I too have been on grandma duty....just got back from visiting my first grandchild in Toronto...a little girl called Sofia. I'm in love!  Here is my submission - yes, MI2 was a bit challenging, I must say.
Happy Valentines Day!
 Tangled Tidbits -
Congratulations!
*inner striped aura in Opus
*soft shading of Cat-kin

From Susan (United Kingdom) ~
Typical - you give us extra time and then I complete the challenge in record time! I am continuing with the “less is more theme” and I think Cat-kin is joyful and spring like in a simple monotangle. I now have lots of time to practise Mi-2 – thank you for the extra notes.
 Tangled Tidbits -
*weighted stem lines
*wonderful monotangle

From Ria Matheussen, CZT (Belgium) ~
Thank you dear Adele for this wonderful challenge that reminds me
already of the coming spring with these 3 wonderful tangles.
I simplified Me too and Opus a little bit, let's call it a "tangleation"
but I enjoyed both tangles very much in this easier form and I love the
uncomplicated string!
After a dark month, we enjoy the first real sunny days of 2019 and that
gives us an extra boost for the coming weekend.
 Tangled Tidbits -
*delicate Cat-kin flows along the string line
*color and shading blend beautifully

From Margarete Gilge (Germany) and here on her blog ~
it was very interesting, to combine the given patterns of your current challenge. Thank you very much for your good idea! You can find my tile also on my blog under the link. I think the frosty atmosphere in my tile fits to our weather. In the morning, the cars are icy, in the middle of the day the sun is shining and it looks like spring.
 Tangled Tidbits -
*wonderful imagery, color, and tangles
*elongated, highlighted Cat-kin puffs

From Simone (Germany) ~
this week it was a little bit difficult to me to make a combination of all the 3 pattern.
 Tangled Tidbits -
*Mi2 aura flows into Opus
*Tipple filled Opus

From Lin H., CZT (Florida) ~
I hope you’ve had fun with your grandkids during this challenge—how can you not, right?! I was happy to be able to complete this challenge after having missed a few lately.
 Tangled Tidbits -
*shading and dark centers add great depth
*pretty roundness to each tangle

From Shirley Wohlsen (Queensland, Australia) ~
Thank you Adele for your very helpful step out for the tangle pattern Mi2, magical.
Also wishing you lots of fun with your Grandbaby.
I’d like to send my deepest of sympathy to Juul’s family and friends
In their reason sad loss of their loved one, RIP, Juul.
 Tangled Tidbits -
*elegant Mi2 finished in curls
*fabulous Tipple and aura

From Lynn G. (Florida) ~
Thanks for the tips on Mi2, very helpful. Thank you for the challenge.
 Tangled Tidbits -
*super shading and highlights - they become an element of Opus
*sparkled striping

From Baafke (The Netherlands) ~
Hope you have a wonderful " gramma time"
 Tangled Tidbits -
*weighted lines and sparkled shading for Mi2
*mirrored aura in Opus and Mi2

From Susie (St. Louis, Missouri) ~

Tangled Tidbits -
*shared aura as in Baafke's tile (I love when that happens!)
*shading along the left side of Mi2 lines adds dimension

From Gabi (Germany) ~
Maybe my tile get a little psychedelic - I blame it to springtime!
Mi2 is a wonderful pattern and maybe you also can discover Opus. Tried to follow the string which is hidden somewhere in the entanglement. Thanks for the nice idea and have a wonderful week!
 Tangled Tidbits  -
*Opus flows from Mi2
*layered tangles, shading, and line variation add greater depth

From Sue Leslie, CZT (New Mexico) ~
A couple of new tangles for me. Cat kin makes me start dreaming of spring and I sit here with snow and 4 degrees on our thermometer this morning so spring is a long way off. I do thank you Adele for a great weekly challenge keeping me inside and warm for a few hours this weekend. Glad you gave us the extra week this time as didn’t get it done until Sunday morning so would not of made the normal Saturday deadline.
 Tangled Tidbits -
A warm tile for freezing temps...
*wispy Cat-kin
*Mi2 and Opus filled string space

From Karen Buse (California) ~
I have a strange relationship with Cat-kin; I hesitate to use it but love the way it turns out every time I do. Something about the implied boundary of those dots and dashes is both scary and exciting. (Is it weird to talk about drawing that way?) I decided I wanted to be able to use white on the Cat-kin buds so I used a mid-toned tile…for the first time! I used a white colored pencil but I think I would have been happier with a white chalk pencil. Something to try next time!
Thanks as always for providing inspiration!
 Tangled Tidbits -
Not weird at all, thoroughly enjoyable and accurate!
*bold lines envelope white Cat-kin puffs
*beautifully detailed Mi2 layered in the background

From Lisette (Switzerland) ~
Herewith my entry for IAST #280. I love the patterns but had not idea how to bring them together... I started with Opus and suddenly the rest fell into place.
 Tangled Tidbits -
*gorgeous morphing of tangles
*Cat-kin tipped Mi2 lines

From Jane (Surrey, United Kingdom) ~
Attached is my entry for this challenge. I was having fun with gold ink this weekend so have added gold ink highlights and edging, although not all that visible in the photo.
 Tangled Tidbits -
*lightly lined Mi2 and Cat-kin contrast with bolder Opus
*wonderful coloring, curves, and shading add dimension

From Allison (California) ~
Here is my entry for IAST #280. I wish I had more contrast in mine, but this is what wanted to happen. I am anxious to see what others came up with.
 Tangled Tidbits -
*Cat-kin filled string lines
*3D aura in Mi2

From Cassi (Illinois) ~
New-to-me tangles, I had to practice Mi2 a lot and still made a rather glaring mistake. I found your step out really helpful, though! And I really love Cat-kin.
 Tangled Tidbits -
*Tipple lined Opus
*marvelous Mi2 border

From Gudrun (Germany) ~
many thanks your wonderful ideas – here is my contribution
Greetings from Germany
 Tangled Tidbits -
*repeating dark sparkled orbs unite the tangles
*layered branches o Cat-kin

From JoAnne (Ontario, Canada) ~
I loved Cat-Kin and Opus but when I added the Mi2, the tile was way too busy, so I covered it over in blue. You can still see the remnants under the blue! Your Mi2 tangling hints were helpful and one day I will try again!!
 Tangled Tidbits -
*glorious results as the tangles led the way
*weighted lines, dark orbs, soft shading

From Mariam G. (Port Hueneme, California) ~
First, I absolutely loved your breakdown of Mi2! With the dot grid, it always felt so rigid, for some reason. This method does indeed create more flow and freedom. So once again - thank you for the enlightenment!
Hope your visit with your Grandchildren was filled with laughter and love!
 Tangled Tidbits -
*flowing Mi2 with aura and shading
*Opus full and halved

From Vena C (Whitby, Ontario, Canada) ~
My sympathy to Juul's family and friends. It is always hard to lose someone.
I hope, Adele, that you had a wonderful time with your grandchildren. I am sure they kept you on your toes and that now you are looking forward to a bit of a rest and some tangling time.
 Tangled Tidbits -
*beautifully shaded tangles
*Cat-kin's dashes and dots extend outward

From Ragged Ray (United Kingdom) ~
As I settled down to work on my tile for your challenge I expected to have fun tangling ornate versions of Mi2. But that's not what happened. Instead a minimal fusion of Opus and Cat-Kin. Engrossing and relaxing with rounding, auras and soft shading. The thrill of unexpected results is still one of the things I love most about Zentangle.
 Tangled Tidbits -
*delightful details abound
*aura tapers in size on each curve

From Lynn F. (Florida) ~
I hope you had a wonderful time visiting your family.
These were 3 new tangles for me. I love Cat-kin, it’s so delicate.
Here’s my tile.
 Tangled Tidbits -
*a spot of white for each delicate Cat-kin
*Opus with aura, striping, dots, highlights, sparkle, and shading

From Hilary (Chicago) ~
I hope this finds you well and that you’ve been having a wonderful “ gramma “ time. I can’t imagine it’s anything but delightful!
Here’s my submission for this week’s tile. As you can see, it’s in three parts. I thought I’d try something different and while I was assembling it, preparing to glue everything down, I thought the shadows added some interest. So I snapped the photo and didn’t add the glue.
Thanks so much for these assignments. Yes, sometimes I think of them as difficult homework, but I’m always glad that I try each challenge.
 Tangled Tidbits -
*lighter Mi2 background
*layered Opus and Cat-kin create a shadowed effect - how fun!

From Priscilla DeConti, CZT (Kingston, New York) ~
I must say that none of these tangles were on my top ten list...so I was stretched just a bit
Thank you Adele for the tip on MI2 which really helped.
Great challenge!
Tangled Tidbits -
*tangles flow in each string section
*colorful tile and shading

From Jane Rhea (Indiana) ~
Thank you for the inspiring string and the “Tips for Tangling 3G Mi2”! Your tips are absolutely the best and always add zen to my tangling! For some reason, I just could not stop fussing around with this tile. Once I start tinkering around, it’s hard to stop!
Hugs all around
 Tangled Tidbits -
*Cat-kin border with darkened aura
*Mi2 tucked under full and halved Opus filled with shaded Tipple

From Henrike Bratz, CZT (Germany) ~
I tangled this tile one early morning with trouble on my mind. The tangles lifted me up. I like opus and cat-kin is just so lovely and soft. It kept with those two. There wasn’t any space for a third tangle. I think the tile “Smells” like spring and that’s what we all are longing for.
 Tangled Tidbits -
*soft, lovely tangles
*shaded border and a touch for the tangles

From Sue Agnew (Tucson, Arizona) ~
I really like Mi2, I think because of its three-dimensional-ness. Your “tips” did make it easier to get the initial layout going. Not perfect, but easier! Even with 2 weeks I could have used more practice time on it — but I’m also trying to be more spontaneous and less studied which I believe is the point of Zentangle. I took up so much space with Mi2, I ended up just putting a nod to Opus in the stems that Catkin is growing on.
Thank you! Hope you enjoyed your gramma time!
 Tangled Tidbits -
*Opus curls flow from Mi2 lines
*dainty Cat-kin with a touch of shading

From Moblue (Bremen, Germany) ~
here's my tile for IAST#280.
I hope I'm not too late yet. Because of a violent bronchitis I have spent the whole Saturday in bed thinking jealously of your Granny Weekend last week. Mine should have been this actual one, but both Nana and Granddad cough like crazy. It sounds like there are 2 big dogs barking all over the place. So we had to postpone the Granny Weekend. I just woke up this early minute and it occurs to me that I still wanted to send the tile. And here we are now.
 Tangled Tidbits -
Oh!  I do hope you feel better soon and get you Nana time in!
*an explosion of aura-ed Opus
*rows and rows of Mi2

From Sharon Fite (California) ~
Thank you, thank you, Adele, for the tangling tips for Mi2! I've tried the tangle several times, but was always unhappy with the "seeds" placement. You really hit the nail on the head with the C curves. I'll be using Mi2 more often. Thanks for selecting Cat-kin and Opus as well. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone's tiles.
 Tangled Tidbits -
*flowing Mi2
*Zinger tipped Opus and wispy Cat-kin

From Marjan Heemskerk (The Netherlands) ~
It is nice to participate again in IAST and your tips for Mi2 were very welcome. It is more easier to play with now.
Thank you for sharing the sad news about Juul. It still warms my hart that we are such a warm and respectful community. Thank you for making this possible.
 Tangled Tidbits -
*awesome Opus with alternating details
*spray of Cat-kin and Mi2 corners

From Kathy Millard (Prince George, British Columbia, Canada) ~
I'm having a lot of fun with the challenge...it's really got me back into Zentangling daily.
Tangled Tidbits -
*wonderful fill of Tipple
*weighted string lines and a touch of Cat-kin

From Gill Green (Israel) ~
Had such fun doing this. Love the simplicity and "Japanese" look of cat-kin compared to the complexity of the other tangles. Hope you are having a great time with your family Adele.

Tangled Tidbits -
*'spot on' description of Cat-kin
*grand aura and shading to accent it

From Felicity Strohfeldt (Velddrif, South Africa) ~
Hope you’ve had the best quality time with your grandaughter this past week.
Please excuse this late arrival. Unfortunately the gremlins are in both my technology and life at the moment. Don’t know where to begin, so I won’t even try.
Only got around to tangling late on Sunday, but here is an effort even if it was rushed and my tile is a bit wonky.

Tangled Tidbits -
*Cat-kin tucked into both Opus and Mi2
*shading and penciled Cat-kin add softness and depth

There were so many references to spring in the notes.  I do wish everyone that needs it, a speedy return to warmer weather, the sweet aroma of flowers blossoming, and many more pleasurable hours tangling.

How very dear, too, that Juul was remembered...

Many thanks to the creators of the tangles we enjoyed this week ~

Mi2  and  Cat-kin by Mimi Lempart, CZT

Opus by Maria Thomas

Thank you everyone!

"It's a String Thing" #281

It's Tuesday, your good news day!

I am back from a fabulous "Gramma time" and very slowly getting back into my daily groove.  The glorious results of IAST #280 are almost ready so please check back this afternoon for those.

We are finishing up the month of February (where did that go?!) and beginning the month of March.

The adage "March comes in like a lion and out like a lamb" has been repeating in my head all day.  Here in Central Florida the weather is overcast, raining, and breezy.

Bold, stark black and white tangles seem fitting for this week's challenge and the beginning of March, so let us begin with this string ~

IAST String by Adele Bruno, CZT

The high contrast tangles we will use include ~

Bitten by CZT Carole Ohl
This square grid tangle turns into a familiar pattern - so much fun!

Pinwheels by CZT Suzanne McNeill
This begins as a square grid and then is further divided into triangles.

Strircles by Maria Thomas and Rick Roberts
This will give us a round option.
Scroll down to view Maria's step out and examples.

There we have it - a bold square, triangular, and circular tangle for our string.

While three are suggested, you may find that only one or two fit your tangling mood when you sit down to complete this challenge.

Keep in mind that the string is a suggestion, let the tangles lead the way.

Here are the (Not so) Official Guidelines:

"It's a String Thing" #297 Tiles

Happy St. Valentine's Day!

Our IAST #297 featured the suggestion of a heart in the string and three love-ly tangles.  I trust the results will add the cherry on top of your sweet celebrations.

Let's take a look ~

The first tile arrived from Talia Maynard (London, United Kingdom) ~
Here's my tile for this week's challenge. I always enjoy around Valentine's day because hearts are my favourite shape. They're everywhere! And drawing them is my usual go to doodle so I love all 3 of these tangles. I enjoyed making this very much. Thank you for a fun challenge.

From Simone (Germany) ~
Thank you for your Valentinsday Challenge. I love this 3 hearttangles, it was sooo much fun to draw them. So I was in the mood to make it pink, and more and more and more pink.
A big hello from Germany

From Jane Rhea (Indiana) ~
Thank you for sharing your love through IAST! You are so right...love grows!

From Dani (Indonesia) ~
This is for IAST challenge #279. Have a wonderful weekend.
Thank you.

From Antony (Milan, Italy) ~
Happy Valentine's day.
Much love to all.

From Susie (St. Louis, Missouri) ~
Happy Valentines Day to all.

From Shirley Wohlsen (Queensland, Australia) ~
Attached is my Tile for ‘It’s A string Thing Challenge ‘ #279
Happy Valentine Day everyone!

From Margarete Gilge (Germany) and here on her blog ~
I drew your last challenge incredibly spontaneously and so for Valentine's Day no red, pink or pink hearts but blue and turquoise have emerged. Sometimes it is very interesting to draw without goal and plan and the result can look quite pleasant! You will find my tile on my blog under the link
Thank you for this interesting challenge.

From Gabi (Germany) ~
Hearts all over and everywhere! I’m not the kind of a romantic woman - maybe you can imagine what a challenge IAST#279 was to me...
By the way the suggested string is great and I tried “heart box” first time and used my Polychromos as well as the watercolour pencils. Not really pure Zentangle but my contribution to Valentine’s Day!

From Gudrun (Germany) ~
„Happy Valentine“ and best regards from Germany

From Lynn G. (Florida) ~
Happy Valentines Day, Adele

From VenaC (Whitby, Ontario, Canada) ~
Happy Valentine's Day.

From Cassi (Illinois) ~
This one was quite a challenge —especially Heartbox, which is why there is only a tiny bit of it! Happy Valentines!

From Jane (Dorking, Surrey, United Kingdom) ~
Lovely challenge, thank you for such lovely tangles and also for reminding me about #funsin, such a happy tangle!
I treated each in a different way and was pleased how the red watercolour showed up on the tan tile.

From Mariam G. (Port Hueneme, California) ~
Love these heart challenges! I got a bit carried away and it's a tad too busy, but it was fun nonetheless. Have a lovely Valentine's day!

From Laurel Davis, CZT28 (New York) ~
Sorry I couldn’t use your string! The tangles led me in another direction! LG was new to me, but I’ll be using it again as it was lots of fun to draw. Thanks!

From Sharyn Penna, CZT (Massachusetts) ~
I can heart-ly control myself! I wondered ... LG as a chain ... Heart Box mashed with LG ... and what would Funsin look like in a fragment on point? The fragment meta design offers another heart.
Valentine cheers to the what if’s in tangling!

From T. ~
I had no plan for how this tile should look when I started working on it, which literally got me lost drawing the chosen patterns.
I drew Funsin first using the curves of the string as its midline and adding bright colour to its hearts.
Heart Box didn’t exactly get boxed because I drew the grid lines in pencil then forgot to outline them in ink.
LG was my favourite of the patterns to draw because of its repeating auras; and being able to add so much shading, more colour, and touches of gold to the tile.
Thanks for another fun challenge Adele!

From Hilary (Chicago) ~
Happy Valentines Day! I hope yours is a very happy one.

From Sue Leslie, CZT (New Mexico) and here on her blog ~
Happy Valentines Day! Heart month is a favorite of mine and always so much fun to play with heart tangles. Thanks Adele for always making the week so much more fun, tho I do some and miss some but always a great challenge. I will post some of my other heart zentangles to my blog... also an announcement of a Zentangle cruise I am planning/organizing for November if anyone would like to come tangle with me this fall.

From Sue Agnew (Tucson, Arizona) ~
Last week I didn’t get to do Ratoon (it’s not exactly “poor me,” I had a Gelli printing class all day Saturday) so I wanted to use it this week. So I did kind of a “less is more” and used Ratoon with your LG. I admire everyone whose Ratoon was smooth and symmetrical. After several tries I decided lopsidedness was charming.
Happy Valentine’s Day!

From Allison (California) ~
Here is my offering for IAST #279. I had fun with these tangles and all the blue pens I had. The shading with colored pencil was needed for definition.
Thank you for the opportunity.
Allison from rainy California

From Lynn F. (California) ~
Here’s my tile for this week’s challenge. Heart box and LG were new to me so I really enjoyed learning them.
Hope everyone has a wonderful Valentine’s Day.

From Elke (Bremen, Germany) ~
What a beautiful string. Even if you have no time to tangle you can not resist. So here is my heard. :-)
A lots of greetings from the north of Germany

From Susan (United Kingdom) ~
Happy Valentine’s Day everyone. I love an excuse to get out the red pen! I often admire tiles where people have left lots of blank space “less is more”. I find it hard not to fill the tile but I have tried to leave some space here.

From Ria Matheussen, CZT (Belgium) ~
Here is my contribution for this valentinechallenge. I love the three
tangles, but I would never think to use just these 3 ones on one tile
but thanks to you I did and I am satisfied about the result. I just
added fragment K14 in the corners that I painted black before.
We just moved and I have no scanner at the moment, I just made a picture
and the final results are always better with the scanner and the use of
Photoshop. That is why, I think the parts with the white charcoals and
gellypen, looks blue, but it is not so bad... Anyway, I'm glad to have
joined I.A.S.T. 279 and I'm looking forward to see the other tiles.
Wish you all the best and take care!
Warm regards from Belgian

From JoAnne (Ontario, Canada) ~
You chose some lovely tangles for this week’s challenge!

A very warm (and warmth is needed!) to Kathy Millard (Prince George, British Columbia, Canada) ~
Kathy wrote:
Currently minus 27 degrees Celsius

Welcome to our IAST community and welcome to our Tangled Map.  If I could bottle up some of this Florida weather and send it to you, I would!

From Ginger (California) ~
...Hearts are one of my favorite subjects but my first year doing Zentangle hearts. Hope this meets everyone's okay.
From Ginger in very rainy and snowy California!

From Sharon Fite (California) ~
I wasn't quite done with Ratoon, I guess. I love it's adaptability, and I think it worked well with the heart tangles. This weekend I attended my first CZT-led Basics class. A shout-out to Kim Kohler, CZT, in the Sacramento area. She is very Zentangle knowledgeable, and the time flew by. Wishing everyone a Happy St. Valentine's Day!

From Felicity Strohfeldt (Velddrif, South Africa) ~
...Here Summer is flexing its muscle to ward off the coming Autumn, so we are having sweltering heat. So tiring.
Anyway tile 279 is a reminder to us that love is in the air with Valentine’s just around the corner. Maybe also a wake-up call to love one another, no matter what, throughout the year. I enjoyed the experience revisiting the theme, as well as the old favourite patterns - so soothing to draw.
Have a wonderful Valentine week Adele and all the tanglers out there far and wide.

From Moblue (Bremen, Germany) ~
Here we are again with my tile for the Valentine Challenge.
Once started, I could not stop scetching one heart after the other.
And as Love and Spring come together, I have added some nice Printemps to fill the gaps.
Thank you for the wonderful string and those perfect matching patterns.
Happy tangling and lots of love for everyone

From Barbara (League City, Texas) ~
In Zentangle class yesterday our CZT challenged us to do IAST #279. This morning I tangled lots of hearts and love with my mother in mind. She passed away 6 years ago today.
All of these patterns are new to me and I enjoyed the challenge.

From Gill Green (Israel) ~
Thanks for the extra time Adele! Had a bit of trouble with my heart boxes but a friend and I had a great time heartangling! Happy Valentine's Day to all

From Priscilla DeConti, CZT (Kingston, New York) ~
Glad I had a little more time this week. I have had some eye problems and tangling was not possible. My eyes are now on the mend and although it is not my greatest, I was able to get this week's challenge done.
I am sorry to hear about a fellow tangler, may she rest in peace.
Have a great week all!
Happy Valentine's Day!

From Donna Symons (Pennsylvania) ~
All We Need is Love Yes .. and friendship ..and creativity ...and chocolate..and Zentangle just to name a few! So very grateful to have time to participate this week. The weatherman predicts another 2 feet of snow here in the west tonight. We are snuggled in and enjoying watching the snow fall. Thank you for everything you do for our community!

From Joanne (New Brunswick, Canada) ~
Thanks for extending the deadline for submitting #279! Here it is. Again, some challenging and new to me tangles.
Happy Valentines Day!

So much love in one place!  Thank you all for the glorious show of tiles and Valentine wishes.

IAST #280 is extended until the 28th.  Have fun exploring those tangles and don't forget to check out my 3G step out for Mi2.

Have a wonderful week!
