Drawings Gilded Tile  by Adele Bruno, CZT

Maria Thomas graciously taught her gilding method to the participants of zenAgain 2016.  This was my effort that also included her new brand new tangle, Drawings.

Tomorrow I will post some photos of my time spent in Newport, Rhode Island, with over 200 CZTs from around the world.  It was a heavenly time as you will see...

"It's a String Thing" #173

It's Tuesday, your good news day!

For the first time in my married life, I can say that our home is decorated for Christmas before December first. The upcoming Florida Arts Tour pushed us to get the house ready in record time.

Our home is now brimming with Christmas cheer and the warm feelings of the season have enveloped us.  It is truly the "most wonderful time of the year."

With all of these happy thoughts, we begin with this simple string ~
IAST #173 by Adele Bruno, CZT

The tangles we will use this week include:

Verdigogh by Maria Thomas, Zentangle® co-founder
This is such an elegant tangle and just right for the season.

Cruffle by Sandy Hunter, CZT
This is a versatile tangle - have fun with it!

"It's a String Thing" #172 Tiles

This week we used a suggestion from Mary Bartrop, CZT, and lightly penciled onto our tiles what/who we were grateful for especially this Thanksgiving.  The words blended into our tangles but stayed in our hearts.

We enjoyed a fabulous feast and treasured family time.  I hope you all did, too - even if it wasn't Thanksgiving in your corner of the world.

We have the pleasure of welcoming three new tanglers to our community and welcoming back some old friends.
Let's take a look ~

The first tile arrived from Amy Barnickel (Florida) ~
Hi Adele! Trying to gear up for a day of grading before Thanksgiving ensues...had to get to a Zen place first, though. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.
Tangled Tidbits -
*bold lines and spaces
*light lines of Fescu topped with bold dots

From Joanne Faherty (Bedfordshire, United Kingdom) ~
I really liked this weeks one Adele and I love the little what we are thankful for idea. Although mine went a little crazy and I actually wrote it. In pen and fescued it. I wonder if you can see the words? They are family, happiness, home and health. There are more in the cubine sections in pencil but I cant remember what they say now....
 Tangled Tidbits -
That is a sweet thought, Joanne.
*corner of Fescu and Tipple anchors white space
*shaded border of Cubine

From Renee (Tennessee) ~
Tangled Tidbits -
*center  tangles tuck into pretty corners
*small Cubine grid and large Ennies

From Joan Delony, CZT (Florida) ~
Tangled Tidbits -
*circular section of Cubine
*elegant Fescu, sparkled and shadow shaded

From Hilary Merola (Chicago) ~
First of all, Adele, I'm wishing you and your family a happy Thanksgiving. I'm sharing with you a turkey I drew yesterday for one of my sketching groups.
And of course I'm including this week's challenge which was fun to do. One thing for which I'm always grateful is your weekly bit of artistic inspiration.

Such a lovely tangled turkey - I had to show him off!
 Tangled Tidbits -
*aura-ed and free floating Ennies
*triangular Cubine

From Miriam G (Port Hueme, California) ~
Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family, Adele! This was a lovely challenge for the holiday - any day, actually. I enjoyed tangling over all my 'thankful' entries, as you said, knowing they are there as well as in my heart. I'm certain all involved are also thankful for you, for stretching our imagination and exercising our creative minds!

Tangled Tidbits -
...as I am thankful for all of you.
*a Fescu bouquet
*double lined grid of Cubine - love the star-like little white dots

From Ilse Lukken (The Netherlands) and here on her blog ~
As I wrote on my blog: To be hon[e]st, I thought about my blessings, but I didn't write them down. I thought I would be distracted too much in wanting to tangle over them, to make them invisible. This doesn't mean I'm not thankful though! ;-)
 Tangled Tidbits -
*rounded intersections of Fescu
*shaded corners make the center looked tucked in behind Ennies corners

From Linda (United Kingdom) ~
Hope you're having a great family thanksgiving celebration.
Managed to find some time to tangle today and enjoyed the simplicity of this week's tangles and string.

Tangled Tidbits -
This is one in a remarkable occurrence in IAST, particularly this week.  I post tiles as they arrive via email and the similarities of back to back tiles is some times very remarkable.
Ilse's and now Linda's feature the same tangles in the same string spaces.

*shadowed Fescu frames lovely white space
*angled grid of Cubine

From Gabriela Garcia (Alberta, Canada) ~
Dear Adele, here is my entry for this challenge. I enjoyed playing with Cubine and Enni; and Fescue has always been one of my favourite tangles. Thanks for the challenge and have a wonderful Thanksgiving full of blessings for you and your family!... We are all very grateful for YOU! You touch all our lives every single week! :-)Cheers from Canada

*gem-like Cubine
*Fescu repeats along the border and in the middle string section

Donna's name and red pin have been added to our map.  Welcome!

From Jessie Plouffe (Connecticut) ~
I know I've disappeared off the face of the earth for the last couple of months; I've been too busy to tangle! I did manage to find a few hours to get this one done over the holiday, and I'll hopefully be able to submit more often in a few weeks once the semester's over! None of these tangles usually particularly appeal to me, but I'm really happy with how this composition turned out.

Tangled Tidbits -
Welcome back!
*rounded corners and tips of Ennies
*shaded string lines yield a very layered look

A very warm welcome to Shirley Wohlsen (Queensland, Australia) ~

Thank you for the new challenge. I'd never done cubine but find it a great tangle. I 've been wanting to do Ennies for a while but never got round to it. Think I need to practise it some more! Fescu is one of my favourites.
Tangled Tidbits -
*wispy Fescu pushes through the border lines
*random Ennies, Tippled between auras

From Christiane (Germany) ~
After I have not participated for a long time, I am back with my tile for this challenge. I like Cubine and found it interesting to combine these 3 Tangles. Greetings from Darmstadt / Germany.

Hi, Miss Adele! This is my submission for challenge #172. I barely got a moment to get any drawing done at all this week, with my kids out of school for our Thanksgiving holiday. I really enjoyed this one, even if I'm sneaking it in while the kids aren't looking.
Tangled Tidbits -
*incredible dimension to the tangles - great shading and highlights
*Fescu repeats in Cubine and Ennies

From Julie (North Carolina) ~
Hope all had a happy thanksgiving. Here in NC we had warm temperatures and enjoyed it!
Here is my tile for this week's challenge.
Thanks again!

Tangled Tidbits -
*aura-ed Ennies clusters
*curved grids of Cubine corners

From Beth Gaughan (North Carolina) ~
I hope you've had a nice a Thanksgiving. Ennies is a new tangle for me, but here is my tile featuring it.
 Tangled Tidbits -
*Cubine fades into white space
*Fescu springs from Ennies

From Tina Kirchhรผbel (Germany) and here on her blog ~
This was a great and relaxing challenge. All the three tangles were familiar to me and I like them very much. And with this string I had endless ideas how to arrange the tile. I decided to draw two of it. I hope you like it.
Greetings from Germany
 Tangled Tidbits -
*shaded Tipple and tangles add depth
*dots accent graceful Fescu

*more lovely shading of Tipple - gives a sense of foreground and background
*Cubine shading differs in each of the four sections

A very warm welcome to Kim (California) ~
I'm new to zentangle and thought I'd jump in with this weeks string. I think I need some practice but I thoroughly enjoyed this and will likely continue to do the weekly challenges. :0)

Tangled Tidbits -
Welcome, IAST is a great way to learn and pracitce Zentangle.
*shaded border and Fescu corners
*curved center grid of Cubine

Kim and a new pin in California are on the map...

From Jennifer (Switzerland) ~
Your string brought images of mandalas to mind so I started with a Fescu center and let the other tangles grow outward from there.
The brown, white and black look less Renaissance here and instead remind me of rock paintings by the San (Bushmen). This could easily be part of a tribal themed quilt!
Tangled Tidbits -
*Fescu circular center - clever way to begin
*Cubine highlighted in four directions - much like Tina's is shaded above

From Michele Wynne (California) and here on her blog ~
Hi Adele, I hope you're enjoying a lovely holiday weekend. Fortunately, a rainy day off was just the excuse I needed to stay indoors and draw today. I really like how this turned out in spite of my little gaffe with Cubine. Thanks for all you do!
Tangled Tidbits -
*Tipple filled spaces of fanned Fescu
*mirrored Cubine grids
*wonderful shading and highlights

From Felicity Strohfeldt (South Africa) and here on her blog ~
Puf,puf. Hiii! Puf,puff Adele
At last I have an entry for this week. So, sorry, I’m so late, (totally pooped and in a tangle of knots this week) too much to do, spring cleaning struck this weekend. Only minutes to tangle. Just finished. So, for better or for worst, tile 172 is on the way. Thanks to Rick and Maria for the great tangles. Thank you for the idea, my thanks are hidden under the patterns as suggested. Also on my blog.
Hope you and the family had a super Thanksgiving celebration.
Also, thank you for my tile of honours for challenge 170. Fantastic surprise, and thank you for all the kind word and compliments.
Tangled Tidbits -
*three variations of Cubine
*multiple finished for Fescu and Ennies, as well
*variation in Tipple sizes along with shading add sense of depth

And now...

the tile for honors this week...

was sent in by...

Jody Genovese, CZT (New York) !

Jody wrote ~

As always thank you

Ennies

Fescu

A Little Tangled Turkey and a Very Happy Thanksgiving!

Tangled Turkey Figurine by Adele Bruno, CZT

In the United States we are celebrating Thanksgiving Day - a special time to thank God for His many blessings.  It is also a time to cook and eat, and bake and eat, and watch football and eat...YUM!

In addition to the countless blessings of my family and friends, I am grateful for YOU.

Thank you for keeping up with my posts and special thanks to the adventurous souls who send in beautifully tangled tiles for the weekly "It's a String Thing" challenges.

I am eternally grateful to be part of the Zentangle® community - a generous, enthusiastic, loving and creative bunch of the nicest people in the whole wide world.

"It's a String Thing" #172

It's Tuesday, your good news day!
It is also Thanksgiving week here in the United States.

Highlights of our celebration include cherished family time, a feast of turkey, stuffing, and pumpkin pie, the Macy's Day Parade followed by football games and more pie.
After the mealtime prayer, we take turns around the dinner table to say aloud what we thank God for, especially the blessings of the past year.

At zenAgain, the ever delightful Mary Bartrop, CZT taught us something she does that goes along with our theme of gratitude this week.

When beginning a tile, Mary adds one more step.  She lightly pencils the dots, border, string, and then in each string section, she writes what/who she is grateful for.  When the tile is complete, the words are not visible, but she knows they are there.  Isn't that special?

For this challenge, after you pencil the string onto your tile, lightly pencil your blessings in each of the string's sections and then tangle away.

Let's begin with this string ~

IAST #172 by Adele Bruno, CZT

The tangles we will use include:

Cubine

Ennies

Fescu

All three tangles  are by Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas, to whom we owe a debt of gratitude for this wonderful art form we call Zentangle®.

Keep in mind that string lines are suggestions and let the patterns lead the way.

"It's a String Thing" #171 Tiles

Today is truly a happy Monday as we have the results of two IAST challenges to view.
(If you missed IAST #170 Tiles, scroll down to the previous post or check the "Past Posts" menu to the right.)

When I chose the patterns for IAST #171, I didn't realize that a supermoon was on the horizon.  Wasn't it beautiful by the way?

Coincidentally, when Rick, Maria, and the fabulous staff of Zentangle® settled on the date for zenAgain, they also didn't realize the timing of the moon's special appearance.

This was the view out of my hotel window at sunrise after the night of the supermoon.
Cresent Moon and Sea Wave were in full view...one more magical thing about zenAgain...
Full Moon over the Atlantic, Newport, Rhode Island  Photo by Adele Bruno, CZT
The tiles are as special as all of the coincidences surrounding the special show of the moon this week.  Let's take a look ~

The first arrived from Sandra (Germany) and is also here on her blog ~
thank you so much for a lovely challenge. I didn't use Sea Wave before but when I saw it for the first time, I just wanted to try it soon. And now I'm really fascinated of this pattern - it was a big joy to tangle it.
For my tile I also used Crescent Moon and added the patterns Agua, Dust Bunny and Msst. In the end my tile became a scene by the sea I think ;-) I love the sea so I had much pleasure to tangle it!Best regards from germany

From Susan (United Kingdom) ~
I liked the SeaWave tangle but in the end decided I liked it better when I rotated the tile, so it is now a vertical wave, maybe a tree or a root!
Tangled Tidbits -
*Crescent Moon changes as it crossed through the doubled border line
*vertical Sea Wave

From Terri Delaune, CZT 25 (Massachusetts) ~
This is my very first challenge ever. I haven't attempted before because I'm not very good at coming up with clever new ways to draw patterns.
But, its for fun, and it won't be wrong, and it will give me practice with patterns I might otherwise not use.
My first time to draw sea wave and I found it thoroughly zen, I tried a line technique that Maria mentioned while drawing shattuck and I was quite pleased. It definitely slowed me down and required more focus and I lost track of everything else (mostly my laundry).
So, here I go.
I do have a couple of questions...
do they need to be done on the 3.5 inch white (No, you can use any zentangle tile, or create your own with paper you prefer to use.)
do they need to be done in black pen can you add other patterns or just the ones you suggest (You may use the usual black, brown, and white pens and when inspired, add color too.  The purpose of the challenges is to learn and use the suggested tangles - as many or as few as you wish - you may also add others.)
Tangled Tidbits -
*sparkled Sea Wave
*two aura lines for Crescent Moon and darkened centers
Terri is now on our map ๐Ÿ˜Š

From Lori Byerly (Washington State) and here on her blog ~
Thanks so much for always keeping your challenges fresh with new patterns to try.

Tangled Tidbits -
*consistent spacing of lines in both tangles
*soft shading gives a great sense of depth and layering

From Jutta Gladnigg (NRW, Germany) ~
So great you're back... I am glad that you were having such a fine time at ZenAgain...
For a change... this week's challenge has been scratched into a rainbow coloured scratch tile. It was fun!
Tangled Tidbits -
*unique way to tangle - and it looks like so much fun!*multiple layers of Crescent Moon

A very warm welcome to  Marjolaine (France) ~
I'm submitting my tile for the weekly challenge. It's the first time I'm doing it :) I wasn't very comfortable with Sea Wave, but I enjoyed playing with Crescent Moon. I'm eager to see what everybody has done with this week's challenge.

From Sharyn Penna (Massachusetts) ~
Hope you had a great visit to RI, and hope you got to see the super moon over the coast!
And speaking of coasts, Ginny Lu's Sea Wave is beautiful and pairs so nicely with Crescent Moon. I'm going to need more practice with it though, (and I need to file my tortillon).
Thanksgiving week is upon us. Sending thanks your way for all your IAST prompts, and to all the tanglers who send you their inspiring tiles every week. And I am thankful for a certain little black frame that holds my tile. I highly recommend your frames for a holiday gift!
Tangled Tidbits -
*Crescent Moon tucked into Sea Wave

Thank you, Sharyn for the good word on my frames - click here for more information ❤Side note:  To restore a point to your tortillion, unbend a large paper clip, insert it into the open end of the blending stump, and rotate as you push toward the point.

From Gabriela Garcia (Alberta, Canada) ~
Hi everyone!
I enjoyed this challenge so much that I couldn't help myself and did two tiles. This was my first time using the "sea wave" tangle and the challenge string lines seem perfect for it. For the first tile, I thought the string and "sea wave" together could represent a perfect winter storm blowing over, so I changed crescent moon a little bit to include the snowflakes inside and instead of continues lines I used dot lines ;-) For the second tile I started with the sea waves and then thought this tangle could also look like farmed hills, and from there it reminded me of the hobbits and their lush beautiful hills so I tried to create the hobbits houses by variating a little bit the "crescent moon" tangle again ;-).... So much fun, thanks Adele! Cheers from Canada
Tangled Tidbits -
*creative Crescent Moon variation
*lovely color combination
Tangled Tidbits -
*beautiful color, sparkle, shading, highlights

Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!

Tangled Tidbits -
*sparkled Crescent Moon and Printemps
*Sea Wave flows through the center

From Danita (Tucson, Arizona) ~
Here is my tile for this week's challenge! It's the first time I've used an official tile to tangle on, and it was such a treat!
Tangled Tidbits -
*Crescent Moon within Crescent Moon - aura-ed inside and out
*tight and long curves of Sea Wave

From Jane Glotzer (Boulder, Colorado) ~
Was bummed to miss last week...but I love what happened with my tile this week, although unfortunately, my photo does not do it justice--:) I even had to photograph it this week instead of scan because the scan didn't show up the colors at all! I do love the simplicity of the traditional black and white, but I really enjoy tangling on a watercolor background...I make a lot of birthday cards this way...Went with some greenish/blueish thinking ocean/underwater. Started with Sea Wave on the bottom...very fun...the kind of pattern I enjoy...Crescent Moon in the center...more Sea Wave at top...left a lot of space...some tiny dots and shading finished it off...definitely has a bottom of the sea feel to it...I really love it and it's even better in person--:)

Tangled Tidbits -
*Crescent Moon aura disappears into the blue mist
*dots repeat in both tangles
*wonderful use of color, space, and tangles

From Jody Genovese, CZT 25 (New York) ~
...it was SO great to meet you in person at ZenAgain. Truly one of the highlights for me. You are as sweet as I imagined you would be.
I sort of rushed this one just to make sure I got it done as I was frantically trying to get my outside Christmas lights hung. Today 60 degrees, tomorrow snow..go figure. Of course, half the strands wouldn’t light and the other half knotted themselves like pretzels even though I was careful to organize everything when I put them away last year…my lights look like my Sea Wave!
I hope you and your family have a very Happy Thanksgiving!
(And it was wonderful to meet your sweet self too!)
Tangled Tidbits -
*alternating details for Crescent Moon layered between Sea Wave
*weighted lines of Sea Wave along with the stark black and white sections add great depth

From Michele Wynne (California) ~
Hi Adele, Just getting this in under the wire again. This was such a great challenge. Seawaves is new to me and was truly Zen to draw and Crescent Moon is one of my Mac 'n Cheese faves. I used a watercolor tile that had an aquatic feel and tilted the string to follow the contours of the colors. Thanks so much for all you do.
Tangled Tidbits -
*elegant flow of the tangles in form and color
*touches of pure white sparkle make the tangles glow

From Julie Bazuzi (Washington State) and here on her blog ~
I fell in love with Seawave at first sight, but I have to admit that I've never really embraced Crescent Moon. So, I went looking for inspiration and I found a be-fescue'd version that I find delightful. I have to give credit to Mary Bartrop (CZT13) at tropitangle.com for making me a Crescent Moon convert!
As always, thank you for the challenge, Adele.
(Mary and I spent some fun times together at zenAgain.  She is delightful!  We are also going to use one of her ideas in our next challenge - stay tuned!)

Tangled Tidbits -
*lovely Fescu accented Crescent Moon
*dots repeat in both tangles - tiny, they make a big statement

From Patricia (Switzerland) ~
I am sure it must've been lovely having a CZT reunion and hope you had a super time.
The new tangle Sea Waves was great. The sea is my most favourite part of our planet!Crescent moon is always enjoyable too.
Tangled Tidbits -
*decorated aura of Crescent Moon
*wonderful Sea Waves

Hope you enjoyed your Zentangling reunion last week.
This week’s challenge had a stellar focus, and seeing as we all experienced the super moon all over the world on the 14th of Nov, I decided to go down the road of a moon-like tangle. With Crescent Moon and Sea Wave, I saw them as the perfect patterns to celebrate the super moon that we will not see for the next 20 years!
Crescent Moon by Rick and Maria works well to decorate the suggested moon. Mysteriously Sea Wave by Ginny Lu creates billowing clouds across the moon’s surface. Shading and highlighting added to mystery. A challenging, but mystically enjoyable challenge this week. Thank you Adele

This past Monday we expected to see a supermoon - extra large! - here in Switzerland. But dense clouds and mist meant we didn't catch a glimpse at lower altitudes. But I did encounter the supermoon in this latest challenge! Seawaves form undulating hills and the zenstone helped bring out the mist of the start of winter.

Congratulations Jennifer!

I have a little something coming in the mail for you.

A huge thank you to all of the contributors to this week's challenge.
Please know that I appreciate and treasure your kindnesses and especially your good wishes on my recent trip to zenAgain.
Many thanks to the creative minds behind the tangles we used this week along with my string:
